Peer Recovery Specialist- Overdose Response Unit

Peer Recovery Specialist – Overdose Response Unit
The Peer Recovery Specialist in the Overdose Response Unit works with local members in the community (Dispatch, EMS, Rescue, Law Enforcement, Hospitals) to respond to calls in the community that involve individuals experiencing overdose/substance use emergencies. Overdose response teams conduct outreach and offer services to people who have experienced an overdose within 24 hours of the overdose event.
Our Peer Recovery Specialist- Overdose Response Unit, provide non-clinical, person-centered, strengths based, wellness focused, and trauma-informed support while helping to ensure the person’s recovery, resiliency, and wellness plan reveals the needs and preferences of the person being served to complete their measurable and personalized goals.
SOME OF THE RESPOBSIBILITIES:
- Responds to calls in the community and can give resources and referrals based on the need of the individual.
- Evidence-based overdose prevention tools, such as naloxone, fentanyl test strips and harm reduction services.
- Evidence-based treatment and recovery services.
- Engage in follow-up contact with individuals.
- Provide face to face interactions that supports an individual achieving their self-identified level of recovery, wellness, independence, or personal strength.
- Maintain regular communication with crisis services staff regarding coordination of individuals in crisis.
- Attend, participate, and facilitate community partner/stakeholder meetings.
- Attends community and agency events and share information on the program and Peer Services.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of current body of mental health and substance use disorder.
- Knowledge of the recovery process – promoting services, supports, and strategies.
- Knowledge of crisis Intervention techniques.
- Knowledge of Trauma and its impact on recovery.
- Knowledge of community resources.
- Ability to provide professional supervision to section staff.
- Ability to conduct interviews and investigations and analyze attitudes and behavior problems objectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with personnel, clients, their families and professionals, individually and in groups.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1 year of personal experience living in recovery with a mental health/substance use challenge.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license
- Employment with Encompass Community Supports is contingent upon the successful completion of our background check process (criminal, DMV, education, drug screening, reference check, DSS, OIG and SAM).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Successful completion of a DBHDS approved peer recovery specialist training program and/or Virginia Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and/or Certified WRAP (Wellness and Recovery Action Plan) facilitator and/or certified SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training) Recovery facilitator.
- Speaking Spanish is a plus.
