Position Overview

We are seeking a Project Manager / Senior Archaeologist to join our team on a full-time, salaried basis. This role requires extensive field experience in Arizona and surrounding states (including the Four Corners region). The ideal candidate is someone who can work independently while also collaborating with a variety of stakeholders, including colleagues, clients, government agencies, and other partners.

As a Project Manager / Senior Archaeologist, you will lead cultural resource surveys (Class I, II, and III), manage reports, and ensure that projects stay on track for a variety of clients, including private companies and state and federal agencies. You will also manage field crews, ensuring smooth project execution from start to finish. If you have solid project management experience, the ability to juggle deadlines, manage budgets, and lead teams effectively, this is an excellent opportunity for you.

This position reports to the Archaeological Resources Technical Group Manager and provides an exciting chance to be part of a growing, dynamic team.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise field staff on archaeological projects
  • Record archaeological sites (both precontact and historic) identified during inventory
  • Prepare National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility recommendations
  • Conduct site testing for NRHP evaluations
  • Monitor fieldwork quality and review paperwork and notes
  • Conduct background research and prepare desktop assessments
  • Analyze artifacts and provide technical analysis
  • Oversee construction monitoring and related activities
  • Write technical reports and ensure accurate site documentation
  • Identify and record archaeological sites, artifacts, features, soil characteristics, and ensure proper documentation procedures are followed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • MS or MA degree in Anthropology or Archaeology
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology (36 CFR 61)
  • Permitted or immediately permittable within Arizona, with familiarity with AZSITE and ASM registration procedures
  • Experience applying Cultural Resource Management (CRM) requirements in line with federal historic preservation laws and policies
  • Proven knowledge of Section 106 / ARPA compliance, NEPA, and relevant federal, state, local, and / or tribal laws and regulations
  • Previous experience working with federal agencies (e.g., BLM, USFS)
  • Tribal consultation experience is preferred
  • Experience in designing and managing CRM field surveys
  • Proven supervisory or field director experience
  • Technical writing and document review experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Collector, Survey123, and other relevant software
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Strong problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills
