Field Organizer

Environment America
Portland, OR Full Time
POSTED ON 1/12/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/6/2025

Environment America is hiring Campaign Associates in cities across the country to lead our campaigns to defend our oceans and public lands, to advocate for clean energy solutions and to campaign for clean air and clean water.

Environment America is a policy and action group working to tackle the most profound problem of our time: a way of living that is depleting and destabilizing the natural world.

We’re advocates for energy conservation and renewable power, so we can keep oil in the ground and stop burning fossil fuels. We’re champions of plastic reduction, so nothing we use for a few minutes is allowed to pollute our oceans for centuries. And we’re defenders of wildlife and wild places, both for their own sake as well as the awe and wonder they bring to our lives.

Key Responsibilities

Campaign Associates will work on campaigns to oppose drilling in our oceans, protect mature and old-growth forests, organize for 100% renewable energy, and protect the water we drink and the air we breathe by holding polluters accountable. Campaign Associates will work on one national campaign or work on state campaigns with one of our state organizations.

  • Build powerful coalitions: Reach out to a broad range of organizations and affected constituency groups across the political spectrum to demonstrate support for our campaign goals.
  • Organize events and work with volunteers: Organize webinars, community events and public meetings. Recruit organizations and members of the public to attend and participate.
  • Earn traditional media and social media attention: Organize media events and write opinion pieces. Build a following on social media for your campaign.
  • Lobby elected officials: Meet with decision makers - from city council members to state legislators to members of Congress - to make the case for our campaign goals. Make a convincing case to legislators who are undecided on a particular vote. When a critical vote is happening on your campaign, work to demonstrate the support you’ve been building on the ground to help line up the votes needed to win.
  • Recruit new people to your team: Help build your team by recruiting volunteers, interns and full-time staff.
  • Run a grassroots campaign office each summer: Run a campaign office for the summer to raise money to support our campaigns, build our organization and membership, and help build critical and timely grassroots support to win key campaigns while honing your organizing and management skills. You may be assigned to a different office location for the summer and should be flexible to move.

Qualifications

Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply. Though we expect you to take your campaign and run with it, we provide training on advocacy and organizing skills, as well as oversight by an experienced advocate.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Passion for the environment and using the power of grassroots organizing to win campaigns
  • Leadership experience
  • Top-notch writing and public speaking skills
  • Good listening skills
  • An eagerness to learn
  • Organizing experience, including building campus or community groups

Compensation and Benefits

The target annual compensation is $37,000 (but compensation may range between $37,000 and $43,347 depending on location). Environment America offers an excellent benefits package. Our benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents, paid sick time (60-72 hours/year depending on location), accrued paid vacation time (accruing 10 days over year 1, 15 days over year 2, and 20 days over year 3 and thereafter), a commuter benefit program, a 401(k) plan with employer match, parental leave, long term disability insurance, and may include needs-based student loan assistance. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.

Locations

Environment America has offices across the country with larger offices in Boston, MA; Washington, DC; Chicago, IL; Denver, CO; Philadelphia, PA; Los Angeles, CA; Oakland, CA; Portland, OR; and Sacramento, CA. We are also hiring associates to work in Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Richmond, VA and Anchorage, AK. Please state your location interests on our application form.
