The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Two Fish and Wildlife Tech 1 positions to be based at the Oneida Lake Hatchery in Constantia. It is anticipated that these positions will be extended through November 30th, with one position continuing through March 31, 2026.These two eight and a half month positions will be working on the Oneida Lake open water angler survey in conjunction with the Cornell University Biological Field Station (CBFS) staff. One of these positions may continue through March 31, 2025 conducting a winter ice fishing angler survey. The positions will start on March 15th and assist CBFS and DEC staff with the egg take at the Oneida Lake Hatchery fisheries until May 1st, when the angler survey will begin.The Oneida Lake Angler Survey will monitor angler catch rates and preferences. Interviews will take place 4 days per week; 2 randomly-selected weekdays and both weekend days. From May 1, 2025 through October 31, 2025 the interviews will be obtained by boat. From November 1st through March 31st interviews will be obtained at access points and when safe to do so walking on the ice interviewing anglers. On interview days-assessing lake/ice conditions for safety with guidance from CBFS personnel. If conditions are favorable, will conduct interviews for 6 hours during a morning (8 AM to 2 PM) or afternoon (2 PM to 8 PM) time slot, with 1 hour before and 1 hour after for travel time and equipment preparation. The fifth day of the work week will be spent assisting DEC or CBFS staff on various fisheries projects. This day will be chosen by the incumbent each week to offer flexibility for their days off. Holidays are considered weekend days and are treated as such when designing the survey; a holiday during the week will result in a weekend day off for the incumbent that week.Technicians must effectively interact and communicate with the public, ask questions regarding their angling experience, and accurately record their answers and biological data on fish caught. Processing fish for length, weight, and scale samples as available is required. These positions require that the Technicians to work in a variety of inclement weather conditions while operating a motorboat. Must work effectively both independently and as a team member. Other duties will include, but not limited to, data entry and other computer tasks.

The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Additional comments regarding the vacancy. Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/30/2025. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.Must be able to work in remote areas.Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required.Overnight travel may be required.Weekends and holidays may be required.
