Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is actively seeking an On-Call Archaeological Technical Specialists in the Northwest Region based out of Seattle, WA. Qualified candidates must have 5 years of experience or relative academic experience in the cataloging, analysis and reporting of archaeological data.

This is a project-based hire dedicated to the WSDOT 167 METC Archaeological Data Recovery. The opportunity for continued employment with ESA past the completion of said project will be discussed/revisited at/near the completion of said project.

Who You Are

  • You are familiar with working in a laboratory setting conducting curation and analysis of archaeological materials. You are familiar with the designing and conducting archaeological research efforts and possess a technical specialty in precontact period archaeology.
  • You are an effective team member experienced in archaeological monitoring, surveys, and documentation of archaeological resources following applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements. You are within a commutable distance to the Seattle and Tacoma areas, and can support local work in-person/on-site as needed.
  • You hold a Master’s degree or higher in archaeology/anthropology or related field. You have a demonstrated ability to use databases and conduct specialized studies of precontact artifacts such as a vertebrate and invertebrate faunal remains, macro and micro botanicals, and or lithics.
  • You are knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region and have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience or relative academic field experience in archaeological practice.
  • You enjoy fieldwork and can walk long distances carrying a backpack; and are able to lift at least 40 pounds. Candidates should be confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments. Physical outdoor work may include, but may not be limited to, work in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in forested environments, fields, arid lands, along stream banks, and in coastal/intertidal areas. You possess a valid CA driver’s license and have experience driving 4WD vehicles off-road and are comfortable doing so. Some night and/or weekend work may be required.
  • You will participate in compliance monitoring and reporting activities for on-going construction projects; you will work near heavy equipment.

What You Will Do For ESA

The seasonal Archaeological Technical Specialist can demonstrate the ability to perform all aspects of archaeological practice and familiarity working on construction sites, coordinating with construction personnel, and interacting with Native American monitors. Successful candidates will fulfill the following duties:

  • Conduct laboratory analysis, build and maintain databases to support interpretation and reporting of archaeological data recovery efforts.
  • Author sections of reports related to archaeological data analysis and interpretation
  • Monitor construction activities and identify archaeological resources;
  • Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel;
  • Write and maintain written daily surveys, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs, including utilizing electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications.
  • Other ad-hoc tasks as needed

ESA has established multiple pay ranges tailored to the economic factors in the geographies in which ESA staff reside. For this position, the range is approximately as listed based on our anticipated hiring locations as noted in the above job details. Actual compensation is determined by several factors including but not limited to an individual’s related experience, education, skills, and the city in which the applicant lives.
