Job Description:
Camp Stoney is seeking Camp Counselors for our Summer Camp Season, which is from June 7th through July 2nd. The Camp Counselor will receive pay in addition to Room & Board for the duration of the Camp Season. This job is ideal for a student finishing High School or in college, particularly for those who are interested in either working with children in an educational/outdoor setting or in a religious vocation.
The counselor's role is to nurture, interact, support, and create a safe camp environment in which the campers will have a fun and faith filled, exciting camp experience. Counselors should foster opportunities for skill building and age-appropriate social interactions. Counselors will spend their time with youth ages 8 and up and will have interactions with adults. Counselors create a safe and fun environment to allow youth to experience a youth-centered faith experience, which also includes hiking, archery, swimming, arts & crafts, and many other summer camp traditions. Camp Stoney has a long tradition of cultivating a faith community for the youth of the Diocese of the Rio Grande through traditional fun-filled summer camps.
As part of the counselor team along with the Formation (Christian Education) Chaplain you will facilitate the Camp Formation Program for each session of camp. Program materials will be derived from: a Formation Curriculum, Book of Common Prayer, and the Holy Bible. The Camp Formation Program will be included in the session schedules by the Camp Director's Formation Committee. The Formation Chaplain will provide direction and guidance on the activities that will be incorporated into the campers' formation for the week, including daily offices (Morning Prayer and Compline), Formation Sessions, Arts & Crafts, and related indoor/outdoor activities.
Camp Stoney Counselor will:
- Enthusiastically participate in all program areas: cabin life, meals, formation, worship, outdoor activities, small and large group activities, staff meetings.
- Work collaboratively with Camp Staff and Leadership to plan and deliver a safe, inclusive, fun, and educational camp formation program.
- Provide continual supervision along with other Camp Staff, ensure health and safety, for all campers, especially those in your cabin.
- Nurture and interact with all campers, remaining attentive to the needs of campers in your cabin as well as throughout the community.
- Take part and participate in the Camp Formation Program, Scheduled Activities, Worship, Music, Indoor/Outdoor Activities, Camp Stoney Clean Up, and Meal Times.
- Take responsibility during your shift for leading camp activities, as assigned: morning and afternoon and evening activities, whether small group, cabin, or whole camp activities.
- Follow Camp Stoney schedule and ensure that each member of your cabin is on time to daily activities.
- Model healthy relationships, facilitate skill building, create joy for a memorable camp experience.
Other Job Duties:
- Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude, behavior, and leadership style.
- Participate in written and verbal evaluations of each session.
- Provide constructive feedback at team meetings to ensure the smooth running of Camp Stoney and ensure that we all have a safe, enjoyable and edifying experience.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimal Qualifications:
- Counselors must be 18 years old.
Must complete online Safe Church & Safe Communities modules as directed by our DRG Guidelines for camp. This will be facilitated before the first day of on-site training. Attendance at Staff Training (mandatory for all staff and CIT’s)
Summer camp experience, as a camper or counselor (Encouraged but not required) Experience working with children and youth. (Required)
Willingness to participate in the full Camp Stoney Summer Season (June 9-July 3rd). Willingness to actively support and participate in Worship and Formation Activities for your own edification.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with any of the following outdoor activities: leading outdoor activities, such as hiking, climbing, swimming, or outdoor sports/games.
- Experience with any of the following indoor activities: group games, music/song leading, Episcopal worship, or other camp activities, especially common activities at Camp Stoney Notes:
- DRG will conduct a background check before the first day of in-person training.
- DRG will conduct online (Zoom) meetings monthly prior to the beginning of in-person training. If you are unable to attend, you must make arrangements with the Camp Director to make them up. You may not miss more than two of these sessions, or we will need to reconsider the offer of employment for Camp Counselor as it indicates a lack of commitment to the paid position.
- DRG will provide you with the information to complete your Safe Church, Safe Community training and learnings from these courses will be discussed in reference to the facilities and the activities at Bishop’s Ridge.
- DRG will provide you with adequate time off from your duties during the Camp Season.
