Position:             Controller

Status:                Full-time, Exempt


Primary Areas of Focus

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, including preparation, analysis, and consolidation of budgets.
  • Develop and maintain financial forecasts and models to support strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Responsible to produce/oversee the periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards.
  • Conduct detailed financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost savings and revenue enhancement.
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
  • Monitor and manage the firm’s cash flow to ensure adequate liquidity for operations and investments.
  • Provide actionable insights and recommendations to senior management based on financial analysis.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain robust internal control systems to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial information.
  • Oversee treasury operations, including banking relationships, cash management, and investment strategies.
  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of financial systems and software.
  • Ensure financial systems are optimized for accuracy, efficiency, and security.
  • Lead initiatives to streamline financial processes and enhance efficiency.
  • Recommend benchmarks that will be used to measure the company’s performance.
  • Provides financial analysis, emphasizing capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Establishes and executes the vision for the accounting department based on the overall company vision.
  • Oversees vendor management.
  • Lead or participate in special projects as assigned by senior management, such as mergers and acquisitions, financial restructuring, or new business initiatives.
  • Serve as the primary contact for financial matters with stakeholders, including investors, auditors, and regulatory authorities; coordinate and manage internal and external audits, ensuring all necessary documentation is prepared and provided.
  • Collaborate with senior management to develop and implement the firm’s strategic financial objectives.
  • Identify and assess financial risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Oversee the preparation and presentation of accurate and timely financial statements in compliance with GAAP.
  • Increase the team's overall effectiveness by developing staff, aligning individual team member strengths with appropriate project tasks, identifying potential obstacles (both internal and external), and performing reviews.
    • Balance staffing and workload through collaboration with the team.
    • Monitor the work of team members to ensure that they adhere to industry standards and best practices.
    • Participate in new hire interviews and staffing selection.
    • Conduct regular 1:1’s with staff and performance reviews in alignment with the performance management cycle.
    • Initiate lunch and learn for sharing new technology or best practices.
    • Mentor team members across accounting.
  • Responsible for completing personal timecards accurately and reviewing and approving associate timecards on time.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and financial reporting standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including finance, IT, and operations, to integrate accounting systems with other business processes and ensure data accuracy and consistency across systems.
  • Participate in strategic planning for accounting systems and processes.
  • Identify opportunities for system enhancements and lead difficult implementation projects.
  • Evaluate company practices and processes to provide input for continuous improvement.
  • Stay updated with the latest developments in regulations and standards.
  • Proactively seek professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • This position is non-billable. Non-billable activities include company & team meetings, professional development, community involvement, innovation time, culture & engagement activities, learning, and training.

 

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • An advanced degree such as an MBA or Master's in Accounting is preferred. CPA certification is highly preferred.
  • 8 years experience in in accounting or finance roles. Experience working in an engineering firm or a related industry is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in preparing and presenting financial statements, conducting financial analysis, and managing budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Strong background in developing and maintaining internal controls, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and managing audits.
  • Strong knowledge of account reconciliation, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processes.
  • Technical and comprehensive understanding of all finance, financial planning, accounting, and tax area of a business, including an excellent understanding of GAAP and state and federal regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing cash flow, treasury operations, and financial resources.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing projects
  • Familiarity with automation tools and techniques to streamline financial operations.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in managing financial data and systems.
  • Extensive experience in managing relationships with software vendors and service providers, including contract negotiation.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate financial risks, ensuring the firm’s financial stability.
  • Ability to contribute to the development and execution of the firm’s strategic financial objectives.
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and accounting regulations.
  • Advanced experience in accounting software systems such as Deltek VantagePoint, SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks, or similar platforms.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively communicate all financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with process improvement methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma is a plus.
  • Prior experience in training and supporting accounting staff is advantageous.
  • Strong presentation skills to groups and individuals with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • This position manages staff.
  • Valid driver's license and automobile insurance.


Physical Requirements

  • Required to stand, walk, and sit.
  • The position may require a visit to project sites occasionally.
  • The position requires a normal range of hearing.
  • The employee must be able to lift 20 lbs. occasionally.
  • Requires prolonged sitting with 15% of the time spent bending and reaching.
  • Must have manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
  • Noise levels are consistent with a standard office environment.
