High School Dean of Culture and Discipline (12-month position)

Equality Charter School (http://www.equalitycharterschool.org/) provides a high level of academic rigor in a nurturing learning community that will prepare scholars to be career-ready in college. Our mission is to ensure each scholar reaches individual academic and personal success through a nurturing, scholar-centered approach; and our approach is to serve any scholar, including those who are under-performing or who are from families in need of more resources.

We offer a positive school environment, we value academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs, we use proactive strategies for teaching appropriate behaviors, and we use project based learning to engage scholars. Our holistic programming focuses on career exploration, extensive athletics, art, health, theatre and music, and a host of special days, like career day, international day, and a borough-wide college fair.

This position was established for the purpose/s of effecting positive behavioral change in students; providing supportive interventions to families and/or students; and complying with school behavior intervention policies, regulations and/or procedures. He/she is responsible for coordinating student management programming and behavior intervention planning.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• Student Support and Behavior Management
• Administers programs and services to support all scholars in improving their functioning and success in the classroom.
• Assists in developing and implementing interventions, functional behavior assessments, and behavior plans to provide a safe and effective learning environment for scholars with challenging behaviors.
• Monitors and resolves scholar behaviors documented in the behavioral management system daily, ensuring timely follow-up and resolution.
• Supervises after-school detention on a rotational basis with the team, providing a structured environment and reinforcing behavior expectations.
• Building and Classroom Management
• Supports building operations, including assisting with building coverage as needed to ensure the smooth functioning of daily activities.
• Supervises common areas, including lunch periods, to maintain a positive and safe school culture.
• Conducts classroom walkthroughs to observe and support instructional practices, classroom culture, and scholar engagement.
• Training and Staff Support
• Develops procedures and training materials for staff working with scholars exhibiting challenging behaviors to enhance programs and maintain compliance with established guidelines.
• Conducts workshops, training sessions, and in-service presentations on topics such as classroom management, Restorative Practices, and other strategies to support behaviorally or emotionally challenged scholars.
• Participates in meetings, workshops, and committees to stay informed on program guidelines and contribute to the school’s mission.
• Culture and Systems Development
• Ensures efficient data collection and monitoring within the framework of the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
• Develops and disseminates information on Restorative Practices and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to staff, scholars, and families through professional development, advisory programs, parent workshops, disciplinary responses, and school-wide culture-building activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A systems thinker with a high capacity for problem-solving and an understanding of human behavior and child development.
• Strong ability to manage multiple tasks and competing demands while collaborating effectively with diverse stakeholders within and outside of the school.
• Experience working with middle and high school-aged scholars, including handling and de-escalating volatile situations with appropriate action.
• Deep understanding of or willingness to be trained in Restorative Practices and PBIS.
• Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
• Prior experience in a relevant role is preferred.
• BA or BS degree required; advanced degree in education, social work, psychology, or a related field preferred.

Salary : $60,000 - $70,000
