Description
The Assistant Dean of Discipline is responsible for student compliance with the Innovation Code of Conduct, found in our charter, and for implementing a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) approach to discipline, working in an interdisciplinary context with the counseling and pedagogical teams to promote a positive school culture.
Job Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Dean of Discipline, the Assistant Dean of Discipline (“Assistant Dean”) supports staff and students to achieve their academic, social, emotional, and behavioral goals. The Assistant Dean assists the Dean of Discipline in providing student management support to the faculty and staff through the implementation and modeling of research-based behavior interventions according to Innovation’s established policies, procedures, and state and federal laws and regulations.
Essential Functions:
- Assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs for at-risk students and other students with behavioral issues.
- Administers discipline in accordance with the Charter, student discipline code, and local, state, and federal law and regulations.
- Recognizes safety issues and follows procedures when disruptive, abusive, or dangerous behavior occurs
- Monitors and helps to promote smooth student arrival, dismissal, and hallway transitions.
- Collects data and student records for the purpose of ongoing behavior intervention service planning and review, and reporting to the City, State, and Federal governments.
- Communicates with students, family members, school staff, and agency personnel and shares information pertaining to behavioral intervention strategies, progress monitoring, and related services.
- Facilitates interventions such as restorative conversations and mediations, circles, and reintegration meetings, and supports teachers in facilitating community-building circles, community builders, etc.
- Ensures restorative justice and PBIS practices are applied equally to all students
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in social sciences, counseling, or status as a QMHP, and at least 2 years of experience working with youth in social services systems, agencies, or schools
- Fingerprint clearance from NYSED in TEACH
- Training in Restorative Practices and protocols
- CPR/First Aid Certified
- Training in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (“PBIS”)
- Ability to speak Spanish is preferred
Required Qualifications:
- Associate's Degree and at least one year of experience working with adolescents or high school students
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Ability to conduct training sessions for students, parents, and school professionals
- Supports students with disabilities and students with special needs
- Maintains confidentiality of students’ records and communications
- Meet schedules and deadlines
- Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, and policies
- Knowledge of:
- Effective behavior management
- Behavior intervention strategies;
- Developmental, emotional, and behavioral disabilities;
- Non-violent verbal and physical crisis intervention techniques.

Evaluation
Performance is formally appraised during evaluation conferences that take place at least once during the school year. Appraisals are transparent, collaborative, intended to promote professional growth, and based on accomplishment of the goals and responsibilities outlined above.
