Description of the Job:
The Fleet Supervisor is responsible for the maintenance and service of County vehicles, and equipment and is responsible for the supervision of department mechanic(s). Duties include repairing vehicular equipment, maintaining inventory, scheduling work, and preparing reports. The Fleet Supervisor will report directly to the County / Finance Administrator.
Essential Functions to be Performed (Including but not limited to):
- Oversee the functions of the fleet unit by providing overall direction to personnel.
- Conduct evaluations of the mechanic and make recommendations regarding merit pay, commendations, or disciplinary actions.
- Evaluate training and supervision for vehicle maintenance personnel.
- Schedule daily work according to established schedules or immediate need.
- Train, supervise and evaluate staff.
- Responsible for fleet OSHA compliance.
- Determine value of and disposition of County vehicles; move any replaced/old vehicles to other Departments as needed.
- Prepare bid specifications for new vehicles.
- Price new vehicles prior to June 1st of each year for budget amounts (tax budget).
- Complete EORF’s for requested new vehicles; once approved check with the State of Ohio for comparison pricing from State Contract; complete vehicle assessment forms.
- Working with the Purchasing Coordinator, prepare documents for all new vehicle purchases.
- Perform inspections on new vehicles to ensure conformance with bid specifications and to ensure vehicle is in good condition.
- Complete, sign, process all titles and license plate paperwork for all county vehicles.
- Diagnosis and repair of County owned vehicles.
- Maintain fuel delivery station; repair nozzles, hoses as needed; order fuel weekly.
- Install/equip all new Sherriff road patrol vehicles.
- Purchase and maintain inventory of new tires for various departments.
- Working with the Loss Control Coordinator determine course of action for any vehicle repairs needed as a result of accident; request estimates for any repairs unable to be completed in-house.
- Determine and supervise preventative vehicle maintenance program.
- Repair, rebuild, replace, paint, or install equipment, electrical, mechanical or body structural components.
- Maintain inventory of parts and supplies as needed.
- Make recommendations for the purchase of equipment to all departments.
- Clean, and organize shop, office, tools and equipment.
- Determine value of and disposition of County vehicles.
- Maintain records and necessary service on County's gasoline pumps; schedule all annual testing for gasoline and diesel pumps; schedule any repairs and submit required documentation for compliance purposes.
- Complete repair orders daily, and bill departments for parts.
- Prepare painting specifications for County owned vehicles.
- On director of County/Finance Administrator, purchase used vehicles for County's fleet.
- Maintain fence and area around gas pumps.
- Take and respond to calls from safety forces after hours regarding vehicle problems; evaluate and determine course of action needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade
- Knowledge of repair and maintenance practices and procedures for various types of vehicles.
- Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in repair and maintenance of vehicles.
- Knowledge of internal combustion engines.
- Knowledge of inventory management.
- Knowledge of welding techniques.
- Knowledge of hydraulics and electrical system.
- Knowledge and ability to follow safety procedures.
- Knowledge of mechanical and electronic tune up methods.
- Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals.
- Ability to identify, analyze, and formulate corrective action regarding engine and equipment malfunctions.
- Ability to work around exhaust fumes and in uncomfortable and dirty conditions.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Experience in the supervision and training of others.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship with supervisors, the general public, and with co-workers.
- Skill in the use of hand and power tools, and specialized vehicle repair equipment.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Five years’ experience as head mechanic or mechanic supervisor.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of trade or vocational school training in the area of vehicle and maintenance repair.
- Training in electronic diagnostic equipment.
- Eight years of equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair.
- Eight years supervision experience.
- Knowledge of diesel engines.
- ASE certified.
- Erie County Residents preferred.
Physical Requirements:

- Lift/carry up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Vary positions from crouching, kneeling, crawling and bending.
- Reaching with bilateral upper extremities into/up to/down to various heights.
- Exposure to weather extremities.
- Push/pull with eighty (80) pounds initial force.
