Job Summary:
The Cardiothoracic ACNP/PA provides selected medical/surgical services within the specialty of the cardiothoracic and vascular medicine and any others as defined by the collaborative agreement the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner has with the collaborating physician. The services delegated in the role will function as an extension of the patient management provided by the Cardiology and CT Surgery faculty. He or she must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The Cardiothoracic Acute Care Nurse Practitioner will assist with planning, implementing and evaluating the plan of care for pre and post cardiothoracic and vascular surgery patients. Management includes, but is not limited to, performing history and physical examination; ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests; and administering of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. These services are provided in both hospital and clinic settings with a focus on cost-effective care. He or she will function in collaboration with the multidisciplinary teams. Additionally, the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner must identify opportunities for and contribute to the improvement of quality, safety and cost, as well as patient and customer satisfaction. This individual will also support the Cardiothoracic Surgeon in evaluating and selecting patients by participating in Tumor Board meetings, lung cancer screenings, and other relevant case review meetings.
Required Education:
Master's of Science degree in Nursing (MSN). Advanced Practice Nurse and Acute Care Certified OR Graduate of Master's degree Physician Assistant program.
Experience:
Preferred:
ACNP: Operating Room, Critical Care, Emergency Department or Cardiothoracic experience

Licensed as an Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Tennessee
Licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in the state of Tennessee
National certification in a specialty (such as ACNP, ANP, CCNS, FNP)
BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and maintained going forward
Certificate of fitness from the state of Tennessee

The APP will:
Maintain and update policies, procedures, and algorithms in keeping with current evidence- based practice
Serve as both a resource and role model/mentor to RN staff, surgical heart team and all peers
Keep current with all required Continuing Education
Provide patient/family teaching to improve outcomes and patient satisfaction
Role Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Perform detailed History and Physical, consults, post balloon removal procedure dictations and discharge summaries
Order, interpret, and provide treatment as necessary: CXR, EKG, Laboratory studies, and other diagnostic radiologic studies
Provide staff education
Provide patient and family education
Provide physician referrals as needed
Recognize and treat acute changes in patient status
Collaborate with physician sponsor and ancillary departments as needed
Round on patients daily
