Substitute Health Assistant
Primary Function
Performs routine and technical tasks related to the school health service.
General Description
- Assists the school nurse in giving first aid and emergency care according to policy and procedure.
- Participates in carrying out policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases within the school.
- Maintains adherence to policies and procedures regarding student medication administration.
- Performs clerical details related to pupil health records, reports, filing, telephoning, and checking supplies.
- Assists in organizing and participating in Immunization auditing and tracking, student hand washing presentations, dental health programs, and all screening procedures as mandated by the State Health agencies.
- Makes appropriate referrals to the school nurse and / or student clinic for follow-up of pupil health problems and maintains necessary documentation.
- Participates in school accident prevention programs and documentation of student accident reports as necessary.
- Cooperates with school personnel and students in maintaining a safe, clean, and healthful school and community.
- Promotes positive school-student relationships.
- Maintains regular attendance.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualification Requirements

- High School diploma; certification in CPR and First Aid; experience in working with children.
- Ability to read, write and interpret documents such as school records and health handbooks. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to keep accurate daily logs and record immunization information. Ability to effectively present information to parents and school personnel and respond to questions about daily routine.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to potentially technical situations. Ability to establish priority ordering of tasks necessary to complete a project and convey these understandings and priorities to others.
Ability to employ logical sequencing, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Must have a working knowledge of computers and their capabilities. Must have certification in CPR and First Aid.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, go up and down stairs, handle or feel objects, use tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, use a telephone and write.

This position requires accurate perceiving of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, handling and working with educational materials and objects, and providing oral information.
