Job Overview
The Paraprofessional (PP) provides support services to individuals with mental illness and/or who may be dually diagnosed. The Paraprofessional (PP) is a fully integrated Community Support Team (CST) Member who provides highly individualized services in the community, promotes recovery and self-determination for members served Community Support Team (CST) services. The Paraprofessional (PP)works under the direction of the CST Team Lead and QP. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely. Possess considerable knowledge of recovery services and an array of intervention techniques to support each person’s personal recovery. Ability to be available for crisis situations.
Duties
- Serves as an active member of the CST, participates in team meetings, and provides input into the person-centered planning process
- Guides and encourages individuals to take responsibility for and actively participate in their own recovery
- Assists the individual with self-determination and decision-making * Models recovery values, attitudes, beliefs, and personal action to encourage wellness and resilience
- Teaches and promotes self-advocacy to the individual
- Supports and empowers the individual to exercise his/her legal rights within the community
- Provides psychoeducation as indicated in the PCP
- Assists with crisis interventions
- Assists the Team Lead with behavioral and substance use disorder interventions. Assists with the development of relapse prevention and disease management strategies
- Participates in the initial development, implementation, and ongoing revision of the PCP. Communicates the individual’s progress and the effectiveness of the strategies and interventions to the Team Lead as outlined in the PCP.
Requirements
- No experience required.
- A minimum of 1 to 3 years’ experience preferred working with adults who have a mental illness and/or substance abuse diagnosis. Per North Carolina Medicaid regulations, this person must have lived experience and a personal recovery story specific to primary mental illness.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with consumers and/or families, stakeholders.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment while demonstrating patience and empathy towards clients.
- Previous experience in special education or working directly with students requiring additional support is highly desirable.
- A commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that promotes learning and rehabiliation.
