Position Summary:
The Finance Director is a critical leadership role at EUREKA! McConnell Science Museum, responsible for the overall financial health and sustainability of the organization. This position oversees all financial operations, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, sound financial management, and strategic financial planning to support the museum's mission. The Finance Director works closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to develop and implement financial strategies that align with the museum's long-term goals.
Responsibilities:
- Financial Management & Reporting:
- Oversee all financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll.
- Prepare and present accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including budget vs. actual analysis, variance explanations, and key performance indicators.
- Develop and maintain internal financial reports to provide insights into program performance, fundraising effectiveness, and operational efficiency.
- Manage the annual budgeting process, working with department heads to develop realistic and sustainable budgets.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards, regulations, and legal requirements.
- Oversee the annual audit process, working closely with external auditors.
- Investment Management:
- Manage the museum's investment portfolio, in accordance with established investment policies and guidelines.
- Monitor investment performance and recommend adjustments as needed.
- Work with investment advisors to ensure appropriate diversification and risk management.
- Financial Strategy & Planning:
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to develop and implement long-term financial strategies that support the museum's mission and strategic goals.
- Conduct financial analysis and forecasting to identify opportunities and challenges.
- Assess the financial sustainability of existing programs and evaluate the financial implications of new initiatives.
- Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to ensure sound financial management and internal controls.
- Payroll & Human Resources Support:
- Oversee the payroll process, ensuring accurate and timely processing of employee compensation and benefits.
- Collaborate with HR on employee onboarding and offboarding related to payroll and benefits.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payroll regulations and compliance requirements.
- Other Duties:
- Participate in board meetings and provide financial updates as required.
- Supervise and mentor finance staff (if applicable).
- Manage relationships with banks, insurance providers, and other financial service providers.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.
- Minimum of five years of progressive experience in financial management, preferably in a non-profit organization.
- Strong understanding of non-profit accounting principles (GAAP) and fund accounting.
- Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, etc.) and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
