Meat Department Manager

Responsibilities

Job Description

Purchasing

• Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery.
• Evaluate suppliers and investigate new sources of supply.
• Receive orders, or ensure proper receiving by department staff, in accordance with established procedures.
• Review invoices for accuracy.
  
  

Meat Cutting

• Establish standards for meat cutting to meet quality, pricing, margin control, and customer service goals.
• Cut meat and oversee meat cutting for department.
• Establish and oversee adherence to health and safety standards and practices for department meat cutting and handling.
  
  

Merchandising

• Plan attractive meat and seafood displays, using color and texture to enhance.
• See that displays are replenished, rotated, and checked for quality.
• Work with merchandising manager to achieve margin goals.
• Provide product information for newsletter, promotions, and customer inquiries.
• Ensure accurate product labeling and clear, attractive signs.
• Develop new products and customer services in meat department.
• Offer samples and suggestions for purchase and preparation in a friendly, courteous manner.
• Assist customers with product questions and special orders.
  
  

Personnel Management

• Hire qualified applicants following established policy.
• Ensure on-the-job training.
• Conduct performance evaluations.
• Communicate human resource issues to the operations manager following established policies.
• Schedule hours for department staff within budget, and review timecards.
• Organize meetings of meat and seafood department staff as needed.
• Ensure Department staff are informed of storewide meetings and policy changes.
  
  

General Management

• Participate in setting budget goal for department.
• Establish and implement operations plans to meet department goals.
• Review financial reports of department performance and take corrective action as needed.
• Attend Management Team meetings and storewide meetings.
• Perform other tasks assigned by Operations Manager.
  
  

Department Maintenance

• Get credit from suppliers where applicable for returned or low-quality product. Ensure department waste items are properly disposed of.
• Maintain meat displays, freeze, prep and storage areas in clean, orderly condition, meeting health department standards.
• Conduct regular inventory counts.
• Maintain department equipment in working order. Advise Operations Manager of equipment repair or replacement needs.
  
  

Job Qualifications

• Supervisory experience – hiring, training, evaluating
• Experience managing fresh meat department purchasing, merchandising, and pricing to meet goals for sales, margin, customer service, and department expenses
• Preferred experience in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Customer service skills
• Ability to stand for long periods in cold work conditions
• Knowledge of organic and commercial growing practices, and organic certification regulations
• Knowledge of handling procedures of organic product
• Ability to interpret financial reports for non-financial people
• Preferred experience in developing budgets and accounting for inventory
• Communication skills-good listener, ability to give clear directions and communicate well verbally and in written form.
• Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments.

• Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands
• Organized, attention to detail.
• Familiarity with natural and organic foods
• Self-motivated, organized, responsible, flexible
• Regular, predictable attendance with ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business.
• Ability to project friendly, outgoing personality
• Written and spoken English proficiency
  
  

Ability to lift 50 lbs. occasionally
