Position Summary:
The Automation Engineer oversees and takes responsibility for all automated manufacturing equipment, ensuring optimal up time, readiness and optimization. Provides technical engineering expertise to manufacturing through machine and fixture design.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Writes, modifies and installs various machine software programs.
· Oversees and directs manufacturing support personnel in machine programming.
· Analyzes programs and takes action to optimize machine throughput.
· Oversees the use of the Preventative Maintenance program ensuring its effectiveness, accuracy and timeliness.
· Reviews and authorizes replenishment of the maintenance spare part stores.
· Provides technical support when needed for the set-up, calibration and operation of all programmable machines.
· Alerts maintenance or Product Engineer when problems arise.
· Authorizes and schedules field service technicians when needed.
· Makes recommendations for equipment upgrades and when out-of-house training is required.
· Writes equipment justifications for new purchases.
· Directs the work of maintenance technicians when they are involved in automated equipment repair or maintenance.
· Provides direct support to maintenance during “machine-down” situations.
· Works closely with the production supervisor to schedule downtime and resolve operator issues.
· Provides ongoing training for machine programming, maintenance and machine operations.
· Assists the production supervisor and product engineer in workplace training as required.
· Provides hardware, software and technical engineering support as requested for design and development of production automation equipment using knowledge of mechanics, pneumatics, PLC programmers and various machine shop tools.
· Actively participates in new product designs during development phase and recommends changes where advisable to minimize costs, ensure manufacturability and to conform to existing production capabilities.
· Assists the product engineer as required in developing, evaluating, and improving manufacturing methods utilizing knowledge of product design, materials, processes, production equipment capabilities, assembly methods and quality control standards.
· Executes various special projects as assigned by the Plant Manager.
Educational Requirements / Experience:
· A degree in mechanical or industrial engineering is preferred; or equivalent work experience with a minimum of 10 years of experience in supporting electronic manufacturing operations with some degree of supervisory or project leadership responsibility over technical support personnel.
· Must possess in-depth knowledge of various machine and PLC program languages.
· Must be able to set up and utilize various machine shop tools.
· Ability to work without close supervision in a self-directed environment across multiple disciplines.
· Ability to work systematically in a fast-paced repetitive production environment.
· Must have good oral and written communication skills and have an above-average ability to comprehend and follow detailed procedures and instructions.
· Demonstrate patience and the ability to interact well with others while under pressure.
· Knowledge of the following equipment used in the electronics manufacturing industry:
- Reflow ovens
- Radial insertion
- Axial and DIP insertion
- Silicone coating conveyor system
- Automated wire cutter and stripper
- Solder waves
- Surface mount (Screen printer, GSM, Advantis SB Lightning)
- Conformal coating application
- Various Auto-motion applications
