Hourly Payrate: $20.00 - $33.00 (Dependent on Experience, Skill Set, & Technician Level – I, II, III)
*EVS requires all RVT candidates to complete a Technician Leveling Test during the interview process. This test measures math skills, critical thinking, and medication administration for RVT levels I, II & III.

Job Summary:
As a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), you will play a critical role in providing high-quality medical care to critically ill and injured animals. You will assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating patients in emergency situations, monitor patients in critical condition, and perform various diagnostic tests and medical procedures. Your duties will also include patient care, assisting with surgeries, administering medications, and providing support to clients through communication and education regarding their pets' conditions.

Education & Experience:
Required: Completed 2-year RVT Certification Program or equivalent.
Required: Successfully passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).
Required: Current RVT License & Registration with DORA.
Preferred: Minimum of 2 year's experience as an RVT; 1 year in Emergency.
Preferred: Experience with ZCA pets/services.
Preferred: Gas Sterilizer Certification.
Preferred: BLS/ALS CPR certifications.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Level I RVT:
Greet clients, obtain patient's current body weight, reason for visit and brief history.
Understand patient assessments, normal vitals and alerting DVM when abnormal
Fundamental working knowledge of the triage process.
Primary understanding of animal husbandry.
Assist DVM’s in patient assessment, diagnostics, treatments, and procedures.
Able to place catheters and draw blood from cephalic, jugular, and lateral saphenous veins on stable patients.
Perform and assist with all aspects of animal restraint for exams, procedures, and Venipuncture for all types of blood work.
Able to obtain blood pressure readings with doppler and isometric machines.
Working knowledge of SpO2 readings and how to check accuracy.
Administer SQ, IV, IM, and PO medications and SQ fluids.
Familiar with ECG machines.
Able to attach leads correctly and to identify normal vs abnormal ECG readings
Basic understanding and working knowledge of medical math.
Conversion of mg to ml and calculating drug dosages in ml.
Conversion of kg to lbs./lbs. to kg.
Capable of choosing the appropriate bag and ET tube size for anesthesia patients.
Knowledge of how to appropriately set up anesthesia machines.
Able to conduct sedation monitoring.
Knowledge of ER/ICU crash carts, supplies needed, and appropriate set-up for emergency stations.
Able to set up for procedures with little to no instruction.
Basic knowledge of medications and willingness to look up medications before use, including chemotherapy drugs.
Basic knowledge of toxicities and associated medical concerns.
Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate ISO procedures.
Working knowledge of pharmacy, CUBEX, and in-house blood bank procedures.
Able to perform medical testing such as parvo, FeLV/FIV, urine dipsticks.
Able to read, decipher, and communicate test results to DVM and medical teams.
Comprehensive knowledge of EzyVet platform which includes: inputting histories, scheduling appointments, requesting and entering diagnostics, requesting records, making and having estimates signed, making medical notes, checking and updating financial records, making consent forms, etc.
Broad knowledge of Instinct platform which includes: entering vitals/performing treatments and adding treatments per DVM request.
Able to discern pertinent medical information and clearly communicate to DVM.
Working knowledge of how to operate autoclaves.
Understands how to sterilize and pack surgical instruments.
Willing to obtain Gas Sterilizer certification and/or has working knowledge and understanding of how to utilize a Gas Sterilizer appropriately.
BLS RECOVER certification.

Level II RVT:
Able to set up for e-tube placement, thoracocentesis, and abdominocentesis.
Able to set up joint taps, bone marrow aspirates, FNA/cytologies, and biopsies.
Confidently intubate for anesthesia.
Place both foley and indwelling urinary catheters in male dogs.
Perform urinary catheter and IVC maintenance.
Comfortable and confident with anesthesia monitoring for ASA level III patients or lower.
Working knowledge of all monitoring equipment during anesthesia including ETCO2, SpO2, HR, BP, RR; and recognize concerns.
Recognize abnormalities in BG, PCV, and TS and reliably relay info to DVM.
Proficiency with all hospital lab equipment, both running machines and troubleshooting them
Intermediate medical math.
Intermediate knowledge of the triage process.
ECG knowledge: how to identify and name abnormalities.
Able to use and manage chest tubes, e-tubes, NG tubes, and JP drains.
Able to set up and start a blood transfusion.
Familiar with medically relevant dietary restrictions.
Intermediate knowledge of animal husbandry, including physical limitations of certain patient’s conditions (i.e. TPLO, head trauma).
Understands general categories and uses for common medications.
Will ask/look up any medications they do not know.
Set up and stain blood/cytology slides.
Perform ultrasound guided cystocentesis.
Understands the set-up of Snyder kennels and how to utilize properly.
Obtain samples from central lines.
Knowledge of basic suturing techniques.
Understanding of and ability to maintain sterility while assisting DVMs or other technicians.
Make surgery packs, prep surgical suits, and clean/sterilize surgical instruments.
Gas Sterilizer Certified.
Proficient in most aspects and positions of CPR.
ALS RECOVER certification.
All requirements of Level I RVT.

Level III RVT:
Competent with placing Foley/indwelling urinary catheters in male dogs and familiar with placement in female dogs.
Competent with Central Line use and maintenance.
Confident with Central Line placement.
Familiar with Ventilators and how to troubleshoot.
Familiar with High-Flow Oxygen and how to troubleshoot.
Manage patients on high-flow oxygen.
Basic knowledge of all medications used in ER/ICU.
Proficient with transfusion monitoring and administration.
Recognize and manage transfusion reactions.
Use a blood gas to:
Recognize respiratory acidosis and alkalosis.
Recognize metabolic acidosis and alkalosis.
Working knowledge of common disease processes and associated complications.
Familiar with common medical conditions and their treatment (IMHA, ITP, CHF, DKA, etc.).
Collect blood for whole blood transfusions.
Knowledge of continuous closed chest drainage systems.
Troubleshoot NG tubes, E-tubes, chest tubes, and Central Lines.
Provide nutrition via NG tubes, E-tubes.
Understand how to calculate RER for a patient.
Understand how and know locations to perform arterial sticks.
Set up and perform:
Abdominocentesis under doctor supervision.
Trocar for confirmed GDV under doctor supervision.
Gastric lavage under doctor supervision.
Basic understanding of set-up and performance of fluoroscopy and scope procedures.
Able to recognize:
Abnormal breath sounds.
Auscultate murmurs.
Arrhythmias on auscultation.
Arrhythmias on ECG (sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, AV block, etc.).
Comfortable leading CPR if a DVM cannot be present.
Familiar with ZCA patients and how to perform a V-Gel placement during an emergency (on rabbits only).
Gas Sterilizer Certified.
Competent in all aspects and positions of CPR.
BLS and ALS RECOVER Certifications.
All requirements of Level I & Level II RVT.

Schedule Expectations:
A full-time EVS employee averages at least 36 hours per work week.
Hours typically vary and include holidays, weekends, swing shifts, overnights, and on-call as necessary to fill the needs of the hospital.
A typical schedule for an ICU RVT consists of 3 x 12 hour shifts weekly.
4 on-call shifts required for Day & Swing employees.
2 on-call shifts required for Overnight employees.
