The Plant Engineer I collaborates with others in the direction and monitoring of maintenance activities and small capital projects within his/her assigned building(s) and areas. The Plant Engineer I works with and provides direction to department personnel to provide engineering support to a production plant or an area.
The Plant Engineer I is responsible to define, organize, plan, and execute all small capital investment projects to be cost effective, timely, and safely utilize state-of-the-art engineering concepts. The incumbent has to ensure all activities in assigned area are in accordance with accepted engineering practices, regulations, cGMP and Evonik Corporation policies and standards.
This position provides technical expertise to maintain and continuously improve assigned areas in order to minimize costs and to ensure technical means for safe and high-quality operation. The Plant Engineer I can also be asked to be project responsible on medium-size capital projects and for some new product estimates.

Responsibilities
- Lead small capital and technical change projects from scope to startup, managing strategy, schedules, and objectives for plant engineering and reliability using internal and external resources.
- Support productivity, continuous improvement, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis while ensuring compliance with cGMP, safety, and Evonik standards.
- Collaborate with site personnel and leadership to guide engineering activities, influence decisions, and improve technical performance. Coach peers on safety, compliance, and best practices.
- Develop maintenance strategies, manage maintenance budgets, and track metrics to ensure resource efficiency.
- Troubleshoot equipment and systems, enforce standards, and promote availability and operational quality through documentation and analysis.
- Comply with safety, environmental, and cGMP standards, including PPE use, housekeeping, and proactive risk reporting.
- Ensure team training on current SOPs, maintain training compliance, and participate in safety and quality initiatives.
- Take ownership of personal safety, report incidents promptly, and support a culture of risk prevention and safe practices.
- Collaborate with management on investment strategies, system reliability, and operational improvements.
- Maintain adherence to written instructions, accurate documentation, and SISPQ standards at Evonik Tippecanoe Laboratories.
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in engineering or a related field (minimum Associate degree with significant technical experience accepted).
- Minimum 3 years of experience, ideally in chemical or pharmaceutical processing.
- Knowledge of plant design, production, project and maintenance management, and relevant standards.
- Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills to support customer, area, and business needs.
- Proven ability to overcome challenges and identify improvement opportunities.
- Developing expertise in project management and plant engineering fundamentals.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; able to influence without direct authority.
- Proficient in MS Office and SAP; capable of managing a $2M–$2.75M annual budget.
