Job Summary
The Network Engineer I provides foundational technical and administrative support for the university’s enterprise network, with a professional emphasis on Layer 1/2 networking technologies within the campus environment. The role also includes exposure to cloud-based routing in platforms such as Azure and AWS (Amazon Web Services).

Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A Misdemeanor Conviction, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions in the last 10 years, Class A Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication in the last 10 years, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and ALL Family Violence Convictions regardless of class.
Working Conditions
Specific job requirements or physical location of positions allocated to this classification render the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of section 51.215 Texas education code.

Job Summary
The Network Engineer I provides foundational technical and administrative support for the university’s enterprise network, with a professional emphasis on Layer 1/2 networking technologies within the campus environment. The role also includes exposure to cloud-based routing in platforms such as Azure and AWS (Amazon Web Services).
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Assist in the implementation, monitoring, and support of a high-availability network, focusing on Layer 1 cabling, Layer 2 switching, and VLAN configurations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve network-related incidents, including working with departments via ServiceNow to document and address issues.
- Support the configuration, management, and maintenance of the university’s wired and wireless infrastructure.
- Provide technical assistance for network projects, system upgrades, and new installations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to ensure seamless network operations.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of network documentation, policies, and best practices.
- Other functions as assigned.
- Associate’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- At least one (1) year of full-time experience working in enterprise-class networks.
- JNCIA-Junos, JNCIA-Mist AI, JNCIA-Cloud, JNCIA-DevOps, CCNA, etc. certifications.
- An equivalent mix of education and relevant experience in similar role or any of the qualifications listed above.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Information Technology, Networking, or a related discipline.
- Certifications: JNCIS-ENT.
- Technical Expertise in enterprise networking, including Layer 1/2 networking, VLANs, and Wi-Fi technologies.
- Knowledge of datacenter and software-defined networking solutions
- Familiarity with monitoring tools to assess network performance and identify potential issues.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve network issues in a structured, methodical way.
- Professional communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact effectively with peers, staff, and faculty.
- Customer-service mindset with a focus on responsiveness and professionalism.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment to manage tasks efficiently.
- Ability to understand higher education processes and convey value and needs in the language of the business.
- Ability to effectively prioritize tasks in a high-pressure environment.
- Ability to perform network maintenance and address potential issues in a self-motivated manner with keen attention to detail.
