General Description:
The Instructional Specialist for Secondary (High School) provides leadership and technical support to ensure effective special education programming across secondary schools. This role involves collaborating with school-based teams to
maintain compliance with federal and state mandates, monitoring performance indicators, and supporting the development of inclusive instructional practices. The Specialist assists teachers in implementing appropriate programs for students with
disabilities, while also supporting staff development in areas like English and Language Arts, Mathematics, and school-wide interventions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
? Assists in the development and maintenance of special education programs for all secondary schools
? Collaborates with school-based administrative teams to establish and maintain special education services in accordance with federal and state mandates
? Monitors performance indicators and assists with components of the Results Driven Accountability (RDA) as it relates to audits, the least restrictive environment, graduation, inclusive practices, and support for new special education teachers
? Provides technical assistance on matters pertaining to regulations governing eligibility and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings at select secondary schools
? Assists the Coordinator of Compliance in ensuring that schools are in compliance with all special education policies and procedures
? Monitors monthly discipline, child count, and state indicator reports
? Collaborates with school teams to assist with Tier 2 & 3 interventions, specifically in the areas of ELA and Mathematics
? Assists classroom teachers with selecting, developing, and implementing appropriate instructional programs for students with disabilities
? Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by attending appropriate professional meetings, workshops, and conferences and keeping current with the literature and new research findings
? Contributes to team efforts by accomplishing related tasks as needed or assigned
Qualifications:
• Postgraduate professional license with an endorsement in Special Education; endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12 preferred
• Knowledge of educational programming for students with disabilities and five or more years of teaching experience as a special educator
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Experience with IEP Development software (IEP Online, VA IEP, etc.)
• Experience with monitoring performance indicators and using the data to improve outcomes for students with disabilities
• Experience with the development of strategies and interventions specifically in the areas of ELA and mathematics
• Effective management, team-building, and problem-solving skills
• Effective written and oral communication skills
