Primary Purpose

The Apprentice Line Mechanic Secondary works as a member of a crew in the performance of the various tasks associated with the operation, maintenance and construction of the overhead / URD system.

Primary Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Under the direction of a higher classified, qualified employee; works on circuits and equipment energized up to and including 600V.
    • When working alongside a more qualified lead employee, works on grounded circuits up to and including 69 KV.
    • Under the direction of a higher classified, qualified employee; assists in switching, phasing and grounding of high voltage circuits in accordance with company LOTO procedure, specifications, standards, and OSHA rules and regulations.
    • Under the direction of a higher classified, qualified employee; assists in switching of transclosures, modules, tap holes, cable poles, padmount and subsurface transformers, pole mounted single phase or gang switches, reclosers, motor operated disconnects or other switching points, consulting feeder diagrams.
    • When working alongside a more qualified employee, assists as directed to investigate service failures or other trouble on Overhead and URD systems to maintain and repair service due to failure, storms or other emergency situations. Cuts defective devices out of line, installs jumpers, replaces fuses and conductors or does related work to restore circuits and feeders, operating switching devices as directed. Performs temporary emergency repairs to leaded pole riser cable as directed. Replaces burned down or broken circuits, including wire of all types and voltages and replaces all types of overhead system cables, transformers, regulators, reclosers, fuse cutouts, capacitors, switches and similar equipment as directed. Assists as directed to set, move, remove or brace poles.
    • When working alongside a more qualified employee, assists as directed in the replacement of a variety of fuses: string, sand, current-limiting, Bay-O-Net and low voltage fuses of all types on the overhead and URD system.
    • Under the direction of a higher classified, qualified employee; conducts transmission and distribution feeder patrols to determine cause of circuit interruptions or conditions that might result in future trouble for system reliability.
    • For construction and maintenance of overhead transmission and distribution circuits, installs and splices wire and cable of all types and voltages not requiring lead wiping, including guying and placing sag in wire when working alongside a more qualified employee.
    • For construction and maintenance of URD circuits, performs splicing and terminal connections in open trenches, duct lines or cable poles which may involve making joints or terminations using braid and various types of tape according to specifications or using premolded materials to construct indoor terminations, potheads and elbow terminators as directed by a crew leader.
    • When working alongside a more qualified lead employee, assists as directed the installation and maintenance of fuses, switches, padmount and subsurface transformers; also, primary, secondary and service cables in duct lines or open trenches.
    • When working alongside a qualified lead employee, uses and interprets readings from test instruments and devices such as cable path and fault locating equipment, ammeter, rotator, voltmeter, high-voltage phasing tools, and ohmmeter.
    • As directed by a crew leader, performs work by climbing poles, using aerial lifts, working in trenches, on ladders, platforms, towers, or other such methods.
    • When working alongside a qualified lead employee, uses a wide variety of highly specialized tools and equipment such as hot sticks, hydraulic compression tools, hydraulic saw, impact drill, tension pulling machine, etc.
    • Under the direction of a higher classified, qualified employee; performs the operation of winches, aerial lifts, augers, pole setting equipment, hydraulic tools.
    • Assists in performing containment, clean up and transportation of hazardous materials as required.
    • Fills in a wide variety of forms and reports such as timesheets, credit sheets, street lights installed or removed, vehicle reports, complaint sheet, damage and final inspection reports, etc.
    • Under the direction of an exempt or a higher classified employee, performs all required assigned tasks unless they are considered unsafe, against company policy or against the law.
    • Checks personal and vehicle safety equipment and operation of the vehicle before leaving the yard.
    • Operates company radios electronic devices, and phones according to company and FCC Rules.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of equipment / materials associated with electric distribution system construction, maintenance or operations to include transformers, secondary, streetlighting, and service equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of the principles of electricity.
  • Possess a thorough working knowledge of applicable company safety regulations and general first-aid methods.
  • Ability to don and use safety equipment as required by Federal, State, local and Pepco regulations.
  • Perform work under direct supervision on energized equipment / circuits up to 600volts.
  • Ability to climb ladders, wood poles, and towers.
  • Ability to climb and work from wood poles using climbing hooks and the proper safety equipment.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime on a regular basis and must be available for callout overtime, consistent with the Labor Agreement.
  • Ability to write, speak, read, comprehend and communicate clearly and accurately in the English language.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (consistent with the Labor Agreement), at extreme heights and varying environments.
  • Possess the following licenses:
  • Valid Driver's License

Ability To Qualify For The Following License

  • Commercial Class A restricted Driver's License
  • Flagger Certification (MDOT)
