What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coffee and Cocktail Bar Attendant position at Expensify?
Who we are:
Hello! I'm the founder and CEO of Expensify, a Portland headquartered tech company with employees all over the world. We are bringing our global staff -- plus families -- to Portland for a week to work out of our beautiful office downtown: a 100 year old bank retrofitted with a little bit of everything, including our own cocktail/espresso bar (see: https://we.are.expensify.com/where-we-work).
What we're looking for:
We need two people to staff the espresso/cocktail bar to fix coffee, tea, beer, and basic cocktails for our staff while they work out of the office. The ideal candidate would:
- Specialize in espresso drinks, with great cappuccinos and foam art
- Be adequate at fixing a basic range of the standard cocktail classics
When we need it:
This will be a long gig from Monday June 23rd to Friday June 27th, 8am to 6pm, including ideally coming in the Friday before to prep the bar and generally get acclimated to the space.
Where it'll happen:
You can find it on Google under the Bank of Expensify (https://g.co/kgs/xj6AcNn): it's right downtown, two blocks south of the Big Pink, across the street from the the Midtown Beer Garden (https://g.co/kgs/xcFSu9f, which we started to clean up our neighborhood). In our SF office we have a legit bar (with all the proper equipment, sinks, etc). In our PDX office it's more like "an open kitchen with a very large liquor collection and nice espresso machine", so it will require a bit of creativity to organize the space, but you have plenty of room to work with.
Why we're doing it:
I started the company about 15 years ago, in San Francisco. About 6 years ago we opened an office here, and I moved up with it. Over time, with the pandemic and more, our team gradually scattered around the world (and we hired everywhere). We try to bring the whole team together a couple times a year, and we have such a big and beautiful space, this time we'd like to do it here.
How to apply:
I'm thinking this will not be a hard gig: we're only going to have like 90 employees there, so all you're doing is taking care of drinks for about 90 people throughout the day. However, you are expected to pretty much manage yourself, as we're a tech company, not a coffeeshop, so you're the boss of the bar. Accordingly, I am looking for you to answer the following, in as much detail as you are willing to provide (long answers are strongly preferred:
1) Tell me your favorite cappuccino in town (other than your own), and why you like it.
2) If we call that 10/10, how would you rate your own cappuccino skills -- can you make it at least as good?
3) In your experience, what is the secret to a good cappuccino -- what do people most commonly screw up?
4) How's your foam art? Can you share a portfolio?
5) Have you ever managed a coffeeshop before? Which one, for how long, and what was the most important lesson?
6) What's your favorite Old Fashioned in town (other than your own), and why do you like it?
7) If we call that a 10/10, how would you own Old Fashioned skills -- can you make it at least as good?
8) In your experience, what's the secret to a good Old Fashioned -- why do people most commonly screw up?
9) How's your cocktail presentation? Can you share a portfolio?
10) Have you ever managed a cocktail bar before? Which one, for how long, and what was the most important lesson?
Ultimately, I'm hoping you'll find this to be a pretty fun time, with cool people, hanging in a beautiful space, making drinks for a very un-demanding crowd. We're looking for someone friendly, hard working, dependable -- just a regular ole cool dude/chick/anything. I can't wait to meet you!
