Job Description: Mid-Level Drinking Water Engineer

Position Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mid-Level Drinking Water Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, designing, and improving potable water systems. Completed projects will ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards, support community goals, and ensure the continued operation of the system into the future. This role requires a strong technical background, excellent project management skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams. The ideal candidate will be working in-office full-time out of our Freeland or Mount Vernon, WA locations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Design and Management:
    • Develop detailed engineering designs for water supply, treatment, storage, pumping, distribution, control systems, and monitoring equipment.
    • Conduct hydraulic analyses to support distribution piping configuration, pump requirements, and project layout.
    • Select appropriate treatment methodologies to address identified drinking water contaminants.
    • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure successful project delivery.
    • Coordinate with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to facilitate project approvals and implementation.
  • Technical Analysis and Reports:
    • Perform water system assessments and data collection, for project feasibility studies.
    • Prepare technical reports, design documents, and regulatory permit applications.
    • Prepare preliminary engineering reports and costs estimates to support loan applications.
    • Prepare project plans, specifications, cost estimates, and schedules.
    • Prepare source approval reports to support the addition of new groundwater sources.
    • Prepare planning documents to support the long-term operation and viability of the water system.
    • Assess equipment condition and develop replacement schedule with costs.
    • Analyze and interpret water quality data, past water usage and system demands to determine a water system capacity limits.
    • Conduct field inspections, assessments, and testing during construction to ensure compliance with design specifications, installation requirements, and regulatory requirements.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Standards:
    • Ensure project designs and implementations comply with federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Projects may involve review by Washington State Department of Health, Department of Ecology, local health jurisdictions, and local permitting for the installation of facilities.
    • Stay updated on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes.
    • Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers, water system operators, and other team members.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including hydrogeologists, geologists, electrical/mechanical engineers, environmental scientists, ecologists, planners, and water system operators.
    • Communicate effectively with clients, stakeholders, regulatory staff, financing agencies, and team members to ensure project objectives are met.
    • Communicate effectively with installation contractors, equipment suppliers, and water system operators to understand project needs and ensure completed project is functional and easy to maintain.
    • Participate in public meetings and presentations to communicate project goals and progress to community members and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • 3-7 years of experience in drinking water engineering.
  • Proficiency in engineering software, such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, EPANet, Water CAD, or similar tools.
  • Strong understanding of hydraulics, and water quality principles.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
