Job Summary: Under the direction of a supervisor, assists in administering activities related to assigned recreation program areas such as: special events, facility rentals, adults and youth sports, and or other duties as assigned. Incumbent must be available to work evenings and weekends. Working under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor, will work at one or more of our facilities. There are a variety of areas for Recreation Leaders to work: Referee for youth flag football, Sports Programs for youth, teens, & adults, Day Camp Counselor, Facility Hosting, Score Keeper and/or assisting with Special Events. Leaders would be responsible for completing their assigned tasks specific to the job. Schedule will vary and hours are not guaranteed on a weekly or monthly basis.

 

Hours: Varies depending on season.

 

Essential Functions:

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices:

 

  • Organize equipment and supplies. May assist in the setup and take down of tables, chairs, pop-up tents, carnival games, and other recreation related equipment, as needed.
  • Provide information to the public; communicate and interact with parents, teens, youth, community organizations, school staff or others persons relating to programs and activities.
  • Set up and cleanup for a variety of recreation programs and complete minor maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Monitors renters and groups using District facilities.
  • Checks in renters and reviews facility usage and safety guidelines. Checks in and reviews facility usage and safety guidelines with staff.
  • Ensures all required rental paperwork is completed and submitted to Recreation Supervisor following each event.
  • Unlocks doors and prepares facilities in advance of scheduled activities. Locks all doors and secures facilities following schedule activities. Ensures that all persons have exited the facility prior to locking doors.
  • Ensures minimum maintenance and cleanliness standards for facilities are met. May be required to clean facility prior to or following to bring to a minimum standard. Ensures facility is set up to meet renter requests, District policy, and fire code.
  • Remains on site for the entire time the facility is in use.
  • Monitors and ensures that all behavior is appropriate. Reports disorderly conduct and emergencies to onsite security, law enforcement (if necessary), and the Recreation staff (in a report).
  • Proactively addresses any complaints or concerns from renters and takes corrective action as needed.
  • Promote and enforce safety procedures; render first aid and CPR, if certified, as required.
  • Uses strong customer service and interpersonal skills during public contact during the conduct of activities.
  • Supervises participants and or leads activities, including but not limited to crafts, group sports/games both indoors and out.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate program and other records as needed. Complete routine reports, attendance records and related administrative duties.
  • Acts as Department representative to local residents, community groups, private businesses, and others concerning questions, problems, concerns, and activities in the provision of recreation programs and facility operations.
  • Will attend all trainings when provided. Provide recommendations and feedback on recreation programs and activities, as well as, providing supervision of other part time or volunteer staff.
  • Report to Recreation Supervisor orally and in writing regarding recreation programs and activities, groups or individuals; makes recommendations for recreation programs and activities and solutions for concerns or issues.
  • The Part-Time Recreation Leader may also perform other nonessential duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skill and Experience:

Knowledge of a variety of activities for youth including facility and equipment use; techniques, principles, and procedures used in supervision of recreation programs and facilities; and rules and equipment utilized in athletic and recreational programs and activities and ensures safe and proper use of recreation facilities and equipment.


  1. Minimum Education required: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and/or 6 months of related experience and/or training in special events and youth development, facility rentals and monitoring, adult and youth sports, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Minimum Experience required: Knowledge of recreation offerings in a community setting.
  3. Other requirements: All applicants must be fingerprinted and pass pre-employment background check. Reliable transportation to and from work.

 

Language Skills:                                                    

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.


Mathematical SKILLS:                                             

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

 

Reasoning Ability:                                                  

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must possess and maintain a valid California class C driver’s license, proof of personal vehicle insurance and a satisfactory driving record are required. American Red Cross certification (varies by program, First Aid and CPR certifications required). At the option of the appointing authority persons hired into this class may be required to either possess at entry or obtain within specified time limits designated licenses, certifications or specialized education and training relevant to the area of assignment.


Computer SKILLS:                                                    

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Adobe Acrobat, the Microsoft Office Suite of products and possess typing skills of at least 40-50 wpm. Knowledge of basic office equipment should include: Internet and email, copy and fax machines, postage meter, telephone and answering machine.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

Exposed to dust, noise, machinery, moving objects and other vehicles. Performs simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation. May be exposed to constant vibration of equipment for prolonged periods of time. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting and performing work activities, operating vehicles, tools and equipment, and preparing paperwork and reports. Performs heavy physical labor, such as lifting (up to 30-50 pounds), carrying heavy objects, and using a shovel and other equipment to dig. Climbs ladder and works at heights. Works for prolonged periods of time in sun, heat, inclement weather. Possible exposure to traffic and other potential hazards. Exposure to fumes, dust, and air contaminants which may cause eye and skin irritation.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Typically works outdoors in varied weather conditions with exposure to sun, heat and inclement weather. Possible exposure to traffic and other potential hazards. Regularly works inside and maintains District facilities. May be assigned to work weekends, holidays and irregular hours based on District scheduling needs. May be assigned to work during emergencies, seasonally-caused circumstances, or special projects and/or events in varying climate and temperature conditions.

Initial Selection Review:

The Fair Oaks Recreation and Park District reviews all initial application materials to identify qualified applicants.
