What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cultural Broker - Karen-KOM position at Fairview Health Services?
This position will serve as a Karen community cultural broker at St. John’s Hospital for the Karen SUD Recovery Program.
Responsibilities Job Description
- Speaks with patients and other community members to determine barriers to substance use disorder and mental health services. Coordinates follow-up activities to connect patients and other community members to substance use disorder assessments, medical appointments, and mental health services.
- Collaborates with Karen Recovery Program staff to ensure patients receive accurate information regarding program expectations.
- Attends Karen Recovery Program groups, individual sessions, and assessments to assist patients with cultural needs.

Maintains strict confidentiality with regard to protected health information and understands and adheres to HIPAA Privacy and Security Policies and Procedures
- Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served
- Communicates in a respective manner.
- Ensures a safe, secure environment.
- Helps modify clinical interventions based on population served.
- Provides patient education based on as assessment of learning needs of patient/care giver.
- Completes all required learning relevant to the role
- Complies with and maintains knowledge of all relevant laws, regulation, policies, procedures and standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum of one year experience working with a community-based organization, with the majority of services provided to the Karen community.
- Proficiency in both English and Karen Language - verbal
- Strong understanding of Karen community cultural needs.
Preferred
Experience
- High level proficiency in both English and Karen Language-written and verbal
- Experience in healthcare field.
- Knowledge of substance abuse and/or mental health services
Additional Requirements
- 18 years of age or older, no felony conviction; or have been incarcerated as a result of a felony conviction in last three years and have not had a chemical use problem during the last two years
