Cultural Broker - Karen-KOM

This position will serve as a Karen community cultural broker at St. John’s Hospital for the Karen SUD Recovery Program.

• Speaks with patients and other community members to determine barriers to substance use disorder and mental health services. Coordinates follow-up activities to connect patients and other community members to substance use disorder assessments, medical appointments, and mental health services.
• Collaborates with Karen Recovery Program staff to ensure patients receive accurate information regarding program expectations.
• Attends Karen Recovery Program groups, individual sessions, and assessments to assist patients with cultural needs.

• Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served

• Communicates in a respective manner.
• Ensures a safe, secure environment.
• Helps modify clinical interventions based on population served.
• Provides patient education based on as assessment of learning needs of patient/care giver.
• Completes all required learning relevant to the role
• Complies with and maintains knowledge of all relevant laws, regulation, policies, procedures and standards.

• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

  Required

• Minimum of one year experience working with a community-based organization, with the majority of services provided to the Karen community.
• Proficiency in both English and Karen Language - verbal
• Strong understanding of Karen community cultural needs.

Preferred

Experience

• High level proficiency in both English and Karen Language-written and verbal
• Experience in healthcare field.
• Knowledge of substance abuse and/or mental health services

Additional Requirements 

• 18 years of age or older, no felony conviction; or have been incarcerated as a result of a felony conviction in last three years and have not had a chemical use problem during the last two years
