Job Summary:
Karen Language Spoken Language Healthcare Interpreter I provides language access for all stakeholders involved in the healthcare encounter by providing meaningful language services and supporting effective and equitable communication via in-person or virtual platforms with demonstrated fluency in one source language to one other target language.
Responsibilities Job Description
Job Expectations:
Interpret accurately and completely, conveying the content and spirit of the original message, taking into consideration the cultural context that is responsive to the demands of the situation (in-person and/or virtual).
- Use AIDET and explain the interpreter scope of practice
- Has proven understanding of basic healthcare terminology and physical anatomy
- Able to interpret complex concepts into preferred spoken language
- Manage set-up and flow of communication to promote communicative autonomy
- Facilitate communication across cultural differences and alerts all parties to significant cultural or linguistic disparities that may significantly impact outcomes
- Maintain confidentiality and understands the interpreter scope of practice
- Adheres to NCIHC Code of Ethics & Standards of Practice.
- Demonstrates honest & ethical conduct
- Diffuses conflict between parties by remaining calm and impartial.
- Manage daily workflow in Epic, Microsoft Outlook, and Teams
- Communicate with scheduling office & Leadership Team.
- Adapt to fast pace technology changes within the working environment
- Completes all Educational Annual requirements – Minimum of 8 Continuing Education Units
Adaptability:
- Travel to and provides interpreting services in multiple locations and settings
- Provide Services in multiple modalities: In-Person and/or Virtual
- Demonstrate personal flexibility to meet staffing and patient communication needs.
- Manage and communicates unanticipated changes throughout the day.
- Demonstrate ability to provide language services with a variety of clinical populations.
- Organization Expectations, as applicable:
- Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served.
- Partners with patient care giver in care/decision making.
- Communicates in a respective manner.
- Ensures a safe, secure environment.
- Individualizes plan of care to meet patient needs.
- Modifies clinical interventions based on population served.
- Provides patient education based on as assessment of learning needs of patient/care giver.
- Fulfills all organizational requirements.
- Completes all required learning relevant to the role.
- Complies with and maintains knowledge of all relevant laws, regulation, policies, procedures and standards.
- Fosters a culture of improvement, efficiency and innovative thinking.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications to Fulfill Job Responsibilities:

Education
- Minimum of 40 hours of formal training or college level courses in healthcare interpreting
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in healthcare interpreting
License/Certification/Registration
- Minnesota Department of Health’s Spoken language interpreter roster
Preferred
Education
- Associate degree or higher in interpreting or related fields.
- Certificate of interpreting from an accredited post-secondary institution
Experience
- 5 years of experience in healthcare interpreting
License/Certification/Registration
- N/A
