Overview

Fairview Health Services is looking for a Laboratory Technical Supervisor for the Acute Care Laboratory at M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital.  This is a fulltime, day shift opening.

 

MHealth Fairview Ridges Laboratory Laboratories performs clinical hematology, chemistry, blood gas, coagulation, urinalysis, transfusion medicine, and blood collection and processing. Fairview Ridges Hospital serves a variety of pediatric and adult patients and is home to the busiest Emergency Department in the entire system.  Our Ridges Lab team consists of approximately 90 employees, including five pathologists, and the laboratory is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Technical Supervisor has direct responsibilities for the technical operation of a laboratory or a laboratory section. The responsibilities include the supervision of employees in collaboration with laboratory managers and medical directors. The Technical Supervisor assures the provision of accurate testing which best meets the customer expectations in a cost-effective manner.

Job Expectations include:

Provides daily supervision of the laboratory or laboratory section

  • Supervises employees in collaboration with laboratory manager/director and medical director.
  • Designs and directs workflow within department.
  • Provides leadership in team building and conflict management.
  • Promotes open and effective lines of communication within the work group, with other hospital/clinic departments, FV hospital entities, FV clinics, medical staff, and external sources.

Assumes responsibility for the technical operations of the lab(s) or lab section(s)

  • Supervises overall operation and technical activities of the laboratory.
  • Ensures appropriate staffing models
  • Directs workflow in the daily operation of a laboratory section and provide direction and problem-solving skills for laboratory functions.
  • Oversees the performance of method development research, instrument correlation, and method validation.
  • Assures the performance of accurate testing.
  • Performs a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing.
  • Performs waived, moderate or high complexity testing as defined by CLIA ’88.
  • Oversees and/or performs laboratory information systems functions; ensures that change requests are communicated to LIS and that changes are implemented once made.
  • Participates in and /or facilitates system standardization teams.

Assumes responsibility for Human resource management:

  • Recruits and selects high-quality employees for employment
  • Responsible for monitoring the progress of the orientation and training of new and existing employees and students and ensures appropriate documentation is completed.
  • Fosters environment that encourages staff engagement
  • Encourages professional development
  • Provides formal feedback and goal setting as part of written evaluations and conferences.
  • Responsible for coaching and corrective action
  • Develops learning plans.
  • Re-evaluates staff progress toward goals during the year.

Participates in planning and financial management for the lab or lab section

  • Assists in planning for future developments including changes in staffing, workload, computer, space, equipment, and staff education.
  • Collaborates with the manager in the preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Assists the manager in resolving budget discrepancies.

Evaluates testing results for accuracy and appropriate intervention

  • Acts as a laboratory resource for the correlation of data, based on clinical knowledge, technical expertise, and other condition affecting test results.
  • Determines and supervises appropriate action to recheck abnormal, discrepant, or unexpected results
  • Directly communicates abnormal and critical results to care giver and obtains information from caregivers to resolve reasons for incongruent results (physiologic or methodologic).

Supervises laboratory activities in Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement and Laboratory Compliance Programs

  • Supervises the preparation of the lab section for inspection by accrediting agencies and carries out activities to ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Develops, implements, or contributes to the development and implementation of quality monitors and performance improvement activities
  • Assumes overall responsibility for quality control; serves as resource for QC questions and problems.

Qualifications

Required

 

Education

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in a related laboratory field including the related lab practicum or equivalent routes meeting qualifications as specified in CLIA ’88.
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology an accredited institution (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided); -OR-
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry (Transcript must be provided); -OR-
  • A transcript evaluation verifying equivalency to a U.S. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university (Equivalency verification documentation must be provided); -OR-
  • Completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course and a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry (Transcript must be provided); -OR-
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in molecular biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biology, cytology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, allied health, medical laboratory science, or an appropriately related field (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided).

 

 

Experience

  • Candidates with baccalaureate or higher degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology must have 1 year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing; -OR-
  • Candidates qualifying by baccalaureate degree and semester hours must have 2 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing.

 

License/Certification/Registration

  • Applicant must possess or be eligible to receive appropriate Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification. If not certified at time of hire, must obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
