Overview
We are seeking an experienced and passionate Gardens Manager to oversee and enhance the productivity of our organic gardens, greenhouse, permaculture systems, fruit and nut orchards. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of regenerative and organic gardening practices, fruit tree cultivation, and permaculture principles. This role involves managing daily operations, ensuring sustainable organic practices, assisting the land management team with horticultural projects and animals and fostering a productive work environment.
About the Garden: Approximately 2 acres of fenced garden area with ¼ acre of raised beds plus 2,500 SF of raised bed Cottage gardens, 1 acre of mixed future orchard, berries, high tunnels and greenhouse.
Key Responsibilities Garden and Orchard Management:
- Oversee the care, maintenance, and productivity of organic gardens and permaculture systems, ensuring adherence to sustainable and regenerative practices.
- Supervise the cultivation and care of fruit and nut trees, emphasizing health, pruning, and yield optimization.
Greenhouse and High Tunnel Systems:
- Manage greenhouse operations, including plant propagation, pest management, and climate optimization. Planning and Soil Health:
- Develop crop rotation plans, planting schedules, and seasonal strategies to maximize biodiversity and yields.
- Monitor and enhance soil health through regenerative practices like composting, mulching, and cover cropping. Harvesting and Distribution:
- Coordinate the timely harvesting of crops using proper techniques to ensure quality and yield preservation.
- Manage distribution processes to ensure harvested crops are delivered promptly and in excellent condition.
Education and Leadership:
- Train and guide staff on organic gardening, permaculture practices, and sustainable agriculture techniques.
- Foster a team-oriented work environment and promote a shared commitment to sustainable practices.
Record Keeping and Metrics:
- Maintain detailed records of garden operations, crop performance, soil health, and sustainability metrics to inform future planning.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in organic gardening, permaculture, or sustainable agriculture.
- Strong knowledge of greenhouse operations and hydroponic systems.
- Expertise in fruit tree care, including pruning, pest management, and yield improvement.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
