Primary Responsibilities:
Patient Interaction:
- Identifying patients and confirming their identity to ensure proper labeling of blood samples.
- Explaining the blood draw procedure to patients, addressing their concerns, and answering questions to ease any anxieties.
Blood Collection:
- Performing venipunctures (the process of making an incision in a vein with a needle) and capillary collections (such as fingersticks) efficiently and safely.
- Selecting the appropriate equipment for blood collection, considering factors like vein size and patient age.
Sample Handling and Processing:
- Labeling blood samples accurately with the patient’s information to ensure that tests are conducted on the correct specimen.
- Transporting, processing, or preparing blood samples for analysis according to established protocols, including centrifugation and storage requirements.
Safety and Compliance:
- Adhering to safety protocols and infection control guidelines to protect themselves and patients from bloodborne pathogens.
- Properly disposing of used needles, blood vials, and other contaminated materials in designated sharps containers and biohazard bins.
Equipment Maintenance and Inventory:
- Maintaining phlebotomy equipment, ensuring it is clean, functional, and properly stocked.
- Managing inventory of supplies, such as needles, tubes, and gloves, and reordering as necessary.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Accurately recording information in patient records, including the date and time of collection, the identity of the collector, and notes about the collection process.
- Ensuring compliance with regulations and standards set by hospital policies and government bodies like the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
Collaboration with Healthcare Team:
- Communicating effectively with laboratory technicians, nurses, and doctors to ensure specimens are processed in a timely manner.
- Participating in team meetings and contributing to quality improvement initiatives.
Continuing Education and Certification:
- Keeping up to date with advancements in phlebotomy techniques, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Obtaining and maintaining certification through recognized organizations such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), depending on the employer’s requirements or state regulations.
Other Responsibilities:
- Assist the physicians and other medical staff with the provision of care to patients.
- Conduct medical screenings and evaluations of patients.
- Communicate with patients to provide health education, describe medical procedures, and answer questions.
- Create medical records for patients, physicians, and other staff members.
- Gather and organize patient information prior to the patient's visit.
- Maintain supplies of office equipment and reorder as needed.
- Abide by hospital policies and procedures.
- Communicate with hospital personnel regarding patient information.
