What are the responsibilities and job description for the Optometric Technician position at Family Medical Center of Michigan?
Family Medical Center of Michigan is seeking an an experienced Optometric Technician to join our eye clinic located in our Adrian Michigan community health center.
The Optometric Technician performs a range of duties which includes preparing the patient to see the optometrist, preparing examination and treatment rooms, performing basic and routine vision tests, administering eye medications, cleaning and maintaining ophthalmic instruments, and performing special testing.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
- Provides primary optometric care to patients and acts as clinical assistant to optometrist.
- Acquaints all new patients with office procedures to which they will be exposed.
- Informs patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed, and how the patient will be affected during the tests.
- Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
- Performs visual acuity, lensometry, stereo testing, color vision testing, non-contact tonometry, autorefraction, dilation of pupils, contact lens insertion and removal training and other testing requested by optometrist.
- Performs special testing as needed, including visual fields, OCT scans, fundus photography, and pachymetry.
- Accurately records all information in EMR system according to established standards and optometrist requirements.
- Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records.
- Counsels patients by transmitting optometrist’s orders, use of drops, contact lenses, medications, and answer questions about surgery and specialty imaging required/ordered.
- Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, performing preventive maintenance, and promptly reporting equipment issues.
- Processes prescription refill requests.
- Maintains stock in exam.
- Sets up and assists with minor procedures.
Qualifications Include:
- High school diploma or GED
- Experience in optometry/ophthalmology preferred
- COA preferred but not required, interest in obtaining if not already certified.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills as well as a neat and professional appearance.
- Bi-lingual a plus
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $17.50 - $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
