Summary
We are seeking a Kennel Technician to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for the care and management of animals in our care. Your contributions will be vital in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for pets and their owners.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Ability to handle and restrain animals of all temperaments while using appropriate techniques and procedures.
- Ability to walk animals that may pull or tug.
- Clean, disinfect and maintain kennels and runs as often as necessary
- Disinfect and clean the breakroom, exam rooms, treatment, reception, and boarding areas to control the spread of disease.
- Launder and fold towels, blankets, and surgery linens
- Restock supplies in pharmacy, bathrooms, and throughout the clinic
- Patrol hospital grounds daily, picking up and disposing of any trash and fecal matter in the front and back yard
- Gather and dispose of trash throughout the day
- Check in inventory and break down boxes
- Administer medications as prescribe by the doctor
- Ability to observe and judge animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease or discontent
- Report signs of illness, disease, injury or unusual activity to technicians and veterinarian
- Manually write or electronically record information such as weight, feeding schedules, appearance, and behavior of animals in our care
- Deep clean surfaces throughout the clinic; bathrooms, bathroom mirrors, exam rooms, scales, trash cans, toilets, shelves, etc.
- Ability to judge temperament and react quickly when handling animals who have aggressive behavior.
- Walk hospitalized and boarded dogs several times a day
- Provide general bathing services for cats and all size dogs
- Ability to build a rapport through strong communication and client service skills
- Greet and build relationships with clients and their pets during the check in and out process
- Discharge and admit animals at the request of receptionists, practice manager, technicians and DVM.
- Ensure that kennels and animals are properly identified and that personal property (toys, treats, food, blankets, leashes) are stored in the proper area and identified.
- Ability to create and foster a collaborative team environment
- Excellent attention to detail and sense of urgency, ability to prioritize with an emphasis on quality and accuracy of work
- Strong analytical, problem solving and reasoning ability
- Ability to take direction, follow instructions accurately and accept constructive criticism
Requirements
- Must have strong customer service skills to interact professionally with pet owners and build lasting relationships
- Ability to handle animals of various sizes safely and effectively.
- Physical demands: must be able to stand for long periods of time; must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, and squat; frequently lift, carry, walk, and handle dogs weighing 50 or more lbs.
- Ability to prioritize duties and utilize time management skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently
- Demonstrate a strong work ethic that will contribute to a productive, efficient, and positive work environment
- Must be dedicated to maintaining a positive company culture that will foster an environment of trust, open communication and mutual respect among team members
- Must be a team player who is open to cross training and supporting other departments within the clinic
- Flexibility and reliable transportation is a MUST - this position REQUIRES working split shifts on weekends and holidays. A split shift is divided into two periods separated by a non-paid break. Split shifts require the employee to come in once in the morning and again in the evening. All weekend shifts are completed alone with no other employees or leadership present.
