Every other Friday: 6:00AM-7:00AM/2:00pm-6:00pm
Some weekends offered. Family is flexible on some scheduling within the parameters.
About Client:
We are looking for a compassionate and dedicated Direct Support Professional for a 9-year-old child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). They can be initially passive around new people, but once they warm up, they become very open and social. While the client is still developing their language skills, they can effectively communicate their needs, and it is easy to understand what they are trying to say. This position requires someone who is patient, understanding, and able to provide both structure and warmth in a nurturing environment. This role involves providing support at home and engaging the client in daily activities while ensuring their safety and well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one support, engaging the client in play and other daily activities.
- Assist with communication, ensuring the client’s needs and wants are understood.
- Support the client’s social and emotional development, offering encouragement and positive reinforcement.
- Help maintain structure and routine while being flexible to the client’s needs.
- Ensure the client’s safety and well-being at all times.
- Provide assistance with transportation to and from activities as needed.
Required Skills:
- Experience working with children with ASD or other developmental disabilities is required.
- Must be patient, empathetic, and understanding of the client’s sensitivities.
- Ability to set gentle but firm boundaries and manage challenging behaviors when necessary.
- Must be able to keep up with an active child and engage in play and daily activities.
- Comfortable communicating with a child who is still developing language skills, and able to understand and respond to the client’s needs.
- Must be a non-smoker and free from exposure to smoke.
- Must be able to provide transportation to client to get to and from school

Direct Support Professional (DSP) / In Home Care Giver Responsibilities and Duties:
This role involves caring for a client on an individual basis in their home environment as well as taking them out into the community to learn skills and socialize. This role varies depending on the client but can involve teaching skills of independent living such as self-care, behavior management, budgeting, cooking, shopping and cleaning. Family Relief Resources is not a physical facility -100% of activities happen in the community or a client’s home.
The DSP role can choose to work with 1 or more clients on a regular basis. It is important that the DSP collaborates with the clients' families directly, and with FRR, to create a stable weekly schedule that meets the needs of the client and their desired outcomes. We need enthusiastic, patient, caring, creative and dependable support workers that are ready to make a difference and integrate into their client’s family with love and kindness.
The day-to-day duties of the DSP role requires:
- Smart Phone - The state requires all client visits to be tracked with GPS location verification at clock in/out. You will need a smart phone to access the timekeeping application once you arrive at the client’s location.
- Driving - Have a valid license and car with current insurance. Some clients will need transportation.
- Documenting - Must create and enter specific progress notes after each shift. Also, a progress report is due once per quarter.
- Scheduling - Each DSP has a set schedule and must be able to maintain this with clients.
- Reliability - Because Family Relief Resources is not a facility, we need reliable employees who can work independently, show up for their shifts, and be excellent communicators with their client’s families and with our agency.
- Patient, Kind, and Positive - Helping those with disabilities requires a person who can be patient in all situations, show kindness, and have a positive attitude toward the client and other members of the client’s family even in challenging situations.
- Flexibility - Being able to adjust to different types of personalities and disabilities from day to day.
Direct Support Professional / In Home Care Giver Required Experience:
- 1 year preferred (6 months required).
- Location: Portland, OR
Minimum Job Requirements:
- 18 years or older
- Pass a Criminal History Check.
- Valid driver’s license and insurance.
- CPR and First Aid Certificate (within 3 months of hire)
- State required online training courses (pre-hire and within 3 months of hire)
- Continuing Education (24 hours per year)
- Basic knowledge of technology, including the ability to use a smartphone for timekeeping, submitting daily and quarterly shift reports, communication with office and client family, and additional requirements as needed.
- Has direct experience working with children and/or adults with varying levels of support needs (Including experience with intellectual and/or behavioral disabilities).
- Understand requirements of maintaining confidentiality and safeguarding individual information.
- Be literate and capable of understanding written and oral orders.
- Be able to communicate with individuals, health care providers, case managers, and appropriate others.
