SUMMARY
Family Service League is seeking a full-time Advocate for a homeless shelter in Bay Shore, NY. The Advocate will be responsible for conducting client assessments and assisting clients in achieving self- sufficiency through advocacy, counseling, and resource referrals. The Advocate will perform client intakes, unit and perimeter checks and overall support for clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- The Advocate will perform intakes for new clients upon arrival to the shelter.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with clients.
- Assist clients to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions.
- Provide ongoing support and counseling for clients in reaching their goals.
- Negotiate conflict resolution and crisis intervention between clients.
- The Advocate will conduct regular unit/perimeter checks for safety.
- Issue violations for breaking of rules.
- Accurately report and document in detail all incidents that occur onsite.
- Transport clients in the Agency vehicle.
- The Advocate will complete all necessary trainings as required.
- Obtain coverage when unable to work scheduled shift.
- Arrive timely for all scheduled shifts, including during inclement weather.
- All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree preferred.
1 year of experience in human services preferred.
Prior experience working with the homeless population preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills required.
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office required.
Valid and clean NYS Driver's License required.
Flexibility to work at different sites is preferred.
Ability to work Monday through Friday 12:00AM – 8:00AM required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sitting and standing for extended periods of time, as well as moderate lifting. Must be able to go up and down stairs.
