Job Summary:
We are seeking a per-diem Advocate for a homeless shelter in Smithtown, NY. The Advocate ensures the safety of families and their children, interacts, and provides support to families and children, enforces shelter rules, completes intake consent forms, conducts curfew checks, provides transportation, and turns over units for new clients as they are periodically discharged from the shelter.
Responsibilities:
- Complete new client intakes and explain shelter rules and regulations.
- Conduct curfew checks, including walking outdoors to each unit.
- Conduct Safety Checks and monitor the safety of the property.
- Address any issues of safety in a unit and remove any dangerous items.
- Assist with pantry distribution and assist with distribution of donations.
- Provide transportation and provide crisis intervention.
- Oversee compliance with rules, regulations, and policies of the shelter.
- Set and observe appropriate boundaries with clients, observe client confidentiality and HIPAA protocols, and advocate for client needs.
- Attend staff meetings, individual supervision, and training as required.
- Collaborate with security to discuss and resolve client incidents.
- Read and understand the Policy and Procedure Manual and read and respond to daily emails.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in Human Services or a related field preferred.
- Knowledge of the homeless population and DSS policies and regulations.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
- Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, required.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
- Valid and clean NYS Driver's License required.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to go up and down stairs.
Compensation:
$18.5 - $18.5 Hourly Wage
