Position Summary
The Navigator is a key role within the Veteran Resource Center (VRC), a program of Family Support Services. This position provides comprehensive case management services to veterans and their families, leveraging shared lived experience to understand and address their unique needs. The Navigator works closely with individuals to connect them to vital resources, benefits, and support systems, while also building relationships across the region to expand the VRC’s mission and network of referrals.
Key Responsibilities
- Work directly with veterans and their families to assess needs, develop individualized service plans, and connect them to appropriate resources and benefits.
- Leverage shared lived experience to foster trust, empathy, and meaningful connections with clients.
- Provide case management services, including advocacy, coordination of care, and follow-up to ensure successful outcomes.
- Travel throughout the region to build relationships with community partners, agencies, and organizations for referrals and collaborative efforts.
- Actively participate in outreach and community events to share the mission of the VRC and promote its services.
- Maintain a working knowledge of local, regional, and national resources for veterans, including healthcare, housing, mental health, and employment opportunities.
- Serve as a compassionate and informed resource for veterans and their families, providing emotional support alongside practical assistance.
- Document all client interactions and casework in compliance with agency standards and grant requirements.
- Work collaboratively with the VRC team to ensure seamless service delivery and contribute to program goals.
- Stay informed about changes in veteran benefits and community resources to better serve clients.
- Represent the VRC at community meetings, coalitions, and other gatherings to advocate for the needs of veterans and their families.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and operations of the VRC.
Qualifications
- Required: Veteran status or demonstrated connection to military service through shared lived experience.
- Proven experience in case management, social services, or a related field, preferably working with veterans or underserved populations.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust and rapport with clients and community partners.
- Familiarity with veterans’ benefits, programs, and services at the local, state, and federal levels.
- Ability to travel throughout the region to engage with clients and community partners (reliable transportation required).
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities effectively.
- Proficient in documentation, data entry, and the use of case management software.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care and best practices for working with individuals who have experienced military-related challenges.
- Comfortable representing the VRC in public settings and communicating its mission with clarity and passion.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in community engagement and coalition building.
- Background in mental health, housing services, or employment support for veterans.
- Familiarity with navigating government benefits systems, including the VA.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (preferred but not required).
Work Environment
The Navigator will work both onsite at the Veteran Resource Center, located in the Family Support Services main building, and offsite in the community. Travel throughout the region is a key component of this role, requiring flexibility and adaptability to serve veterans where they are.
