Position Title : Chief Engineer

Department : Rooms and maintenance

Accountable to : General Manager

FLSA Classification : Exempt

Primary Objective of Position

Maintain the entire hotel facility, including the physical building structure, all mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems, and related equipment in accordance with energy conservation and preventative maintenance programs. Ensure the upkeep of guest areas to maintain an attractive hotel.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement and track a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for all hotel equipment, systems, and facilities.
  • Oversee daily maintenance tasks and repairs to ensure the safety and comfort of guests and staff.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the property to identify maintenance needs and address them promptly.
  • Recruit, Supervise, train, and mentor maintenance staff, including engineers, technicians, and other support personnel.
  • Delegate tasks, set work schedules, and ensure that all team members adhere to safety guidelines and standards.
  • Assist in preparing and managing the engineering department's annual budget.
  • Monitor expenses and ensure cost-effective maintenance solutions while maintaining quality standards.
  • Assist in maintain and execute upon the hotel Capital 5 year plan
  • Coordinate with external vendors and contractors for specialized maintenance and repair work.
  • Oversee work quality and manage vendor relationships.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans to address equipment failures, power outages, or other crises.
  • Ownership over the Hotel Safety Committee
  • Ensure that emergency systems (fire alarms, sprinklers, etc.) are functional and compliant with regulations.
  • Ensure that the hotel complies with all local, state, and federal regulations related to safety, building codes, and environmental standards.
  • Maintain records and documentation related to inspections, permits, and certifications.
  • Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and sustainability within the hotel's infrastructure.
  • Implement eco-friendly practices and technologies to reduce operational costs and the hotel's environmental footprint.
  • Respond promptly to guest requests and complaints related to maintenance issues.
  • Strive to provide excellent guest experiences by maintaining a high standard of service.

  • Supportive Functions :

    In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the manager based upon the particular requirements of the hotel :

  • Supervise necessary repairs and maintenance throughout the hotel.
  • Prepare technical data, bidding, project work, alterations, and repairs for properties. Must have basic knowledge of building codes.
  • Actively train in fire prevention, environmental health and safety, and engineering systems. Attend all meeting regarding hotel operations, i.e. department, fire, safety, health and quality improvement.
  • Oversees biweekly payroll. Prepare departmental manpower schedules. Oversee water treatment programs.
  • Attend morning walk-arounds as required.
  • Participation in the Manager on Duty program

  • OSHA expertise
  • Oversee key control through the entire property and departments.
  • Be knowledgeable of policies regarding emergency procedures and security concerns.
  • Specific Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities :

  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace.
  • Must be able to read and write to facilitate the communication process.
  • Most tasks are performed in a team environment with the associate acting as a team leader. There is minimal direct supervision.
  • Requires good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must possess basic computer skills.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of all types of mechanical equipment such as chillers, boilers, water softeners, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems, maintenance of records of power, water and fuel consumption.
  • Must have experience in office procedures, ordering materials, securing bids and of city codes and other applicable laws, building construction, blueprint reading, etc.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state and local laws governing equal employment opportunity and civil rights, occupational safety and health, wage and hour issues, and labor relations, including, but not limited to the following statutes and their comparable state and local laws (where applicable) : Title VII, Equal Pay Act, Pregnancy Discrimination Act, FLSA, ADA, OSHA, FMLA, NLRA
  • Physical Demands

  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to fulfill cleaning tasks occasionally.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs on a regular and continuing basis.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs frequently.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs occasionally.
  • Position requires walking and giving direction most of the working day. Length of time of these tasks may vary from day to day and task to task.
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or related technical school degree preferred. Five to seven years in a major hotel, hospital, or building, including four years in a supervisory capacity.
