Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Promotes safety by partnering with all departments and plant operations.
- Monitor safety and health regulations and provide technical support to plant and office personnel to ensure compliance with Federal and State safety and health regulations
- Ensure all records are kept in accordance with Federal and State regulations.
- Develop corporate safety and health programs and objectives and coordinate safety training programs
- Position will conduct new employee safety orientations, provide ongoing support and documentation for new and existing employees.
- Review injury and property damage reports and perform root cause analysis.
- Conduct specialized safety training programs to communicate hazard control information and ensure compliance.
- Lead and organize Safety Committee meetings, managing follow up tasks as identified.
- Compile, analyze, interpret and report accident, loss and exposure statistical data; prepare comprehensive recommendations for corrective action to eliminate or minimize potential hazards.
- Assist with overall administration of workers’ compensation program.
- Assist in administration of risk management programs and negotiations with vendors and assessing customer service, quality and cost factors.
- Conduct PPE analysis and recommend the purchase of safety equipment and supplies and incorporate essential occupational health, safety and environmental requirements in all purchasing and control actions.
- Maintain SDS database.
- Ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
- Perform other duties as directed that correspond to the overall function of this position.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge or training in occupational health, safety and environmental compliance and human resources background, with applicable federal and state regulations and standards.
Excellent communication skills (oral/written/public speaking/presentation). Strong computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets and databases). Ability to guide and direct teams and/or committees. Skilled in the standards, concepts, practices and procedures within the occupational health, safety field.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
- 3-5 years related experience in Safety, OSHA Compliance, Industrial Safety in a manufacturing or industrial environment preferred
- AA Degree or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or related field preferred
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will coordinate and advance the organization’s health and safety programs. Responsibilities of the position include conducting safety inspections, training for new and existing employees, leading safety committees, ensuring that environmental and safety regulations are being met and participating in team huddles at both Wittern manufacturing facilities (Clive and Waukee).
