What are the responsibilities and job description for the FLEET SHOP SUPERVISOR position at Fayetteville Public Works Commission?
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES :
This class is responsible for supervising, coordinating, and prioritizing the light or heavy-duty shop activities of the fleet maintenance operations for over 600 vehicles and equipment valued in excess of $25 million dollars in support of the Public Works Commission. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, supervising employees engaged in the repair/restoration/maintenance of vehicles/equipment; reviewing work in progress; inspecting completed work to include select quality control inspections; scheduling repairs/maintenance of all assigned vehicles/equipment; advising management about replacement versus repair of vehicles/equipment; maintaining/updating logs/records/files and operating/driving vehicles in performing work assignments/responsibilities. Ensures all applicable Federal, State, Environmental and Local Shop standards are enforced. Operating under general supervision of the Fleet Manager, latitude is allowed for independent judgement in carrying out the details of the work. Extended hours and on-call availability may be required. Performs related work as required.

- Interviews, selects, hires, promotes, demotes, transfers, and recommends termination of employment to management; reviews the performance of staff to encourage growth and development; provides on-going feedback with frequent contacts with employees
- Recommends approval of travel/vacation/leaves of staff
- Performs timely employee reviews in accordance with PWC policies/procedures; applies appraisal process accurately and impartially; corrects performance deviations; subordinates, collectively
- Prioritizes work based upon project requirements to ensure effective utilization of available resources; anticipates needs; provides accurate and timely reports in all areas of responsibility
EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Computer, calculator, communication, and other equipment, as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of safety rules/regulations/ procedures; thorough knowledge of methods/practices/techniques involved in the repair/maintenance of a variety of motor vehicles/equipment including gasoline/diesel engines; good knowledge of supervisory concepts and practices; good knowledge of the receipt/storage/issuance of materials/parts/supplies, and record keeping requirements; skill in performing accurate mathematical computations; skill in using a computer and applicable software; ability to establish/prepare/maintain accurately detailed records and reports; ability to plan/train/evaluate/motivate work performance; ability to supervise people and multiple projects; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with customers, all levels of employees, vendors, and contractors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from a two year accredited university/college or technical school with a degree/certification in automotive/mechanical technology, or related field and a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance/repair of gasoline/diesel vehicles/equipment which includes supervisory or lead worker responsibilities, in a large automotive repair facility; OR
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience as defined in (A) above; OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as defined in (A) and (B) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
SAFETY HAZARDS: Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, chemicals, gases/variations of ventilation.
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: As required in the Public Works Commission’s Safety Manual.
