Job Title: Pain Management Medical Assistant

Reports To: Pain Management Physician/Medical Practice Manager

Job Summary: The Pain Management Medical Assistant (MA) is a critical member of the healthcare team responsible for supporting pain management physicians and specialists in delivering high-quality patient care. The MA performs a wide range of administrative and clinical tasks to ensure smooth patient care operations in a pain management setting. The role involves assisting with patient intake, preparing patients for procedures, managing medical records, and ensuring that clinical operations are efficient and compliant with healthcare regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Interaction:
  • Greet patients, verify personal information, and ensure they feel comfortable and informed.
  • Assist with patient check-in, update medical records, and gather necessary information regarding patient history, including pain levels, medication use, and previous treatments.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms and prepare them for consultations or procedures.
  • Assist patients in understanding their pain management plans and educate them about the procedures or treatments they are scheduled to receive.
  • Clinical Support:
  • Take and record patient vitals such as blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and weight.
  • Prepare patients for pain management procedures (e.g., injections, nerve blocks, or other interventional treatments), ensuring proper sterilization and patient positioning.
  • Assist physicians during clinical procedures by preparing instruments, monitoring patients, and ensuring patient safety.
  • Administer medications or injections as prescribed by the physician, under supervision.
  • Monitor and document patient responses to treatments and alert physicians to any changes in condition.
  • Administrative Duties:
  • Schedule patient appointments and follow-up visits, and manage the office schedule to optimize physician time.
  • Answer phones, respond to patient inquiries, and provide necessary instructions for pre-procedure or post-procedure care.
  • Maintain and update patient charts, ensuring all information is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Manage and order medical supplies, equipment, and medications as needed.
  • Handle medical billing and coding for pain management services, working closely with the insurance company for pre-authorizations.
  • Patient Education & Communication:
  • Educate patients on pain management options, medication instructions, physical therapy, and other non-invasive treatments.
  • Provide detailed instructions for at-home care, pain management strategies, and safety guidelines for medications.
  • Serve as a liaison between the physician and the patient to ensure effective communication and understanding of treatment plans.
  • Compliance and Safety:
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines and other regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that the pain management clinic complies with all local, state, and federal regulations, including safety standards.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Other Duties:
  • Perform other clinical or administrative tasks as assigned by the supervising physician or office manager.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Medical Assistant certification preferred (CMA, RMA).
  • Previous experience in pain management, clinical, or healthcare setting preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology related to pain management and anatomy.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and office software (e.g., MS Office).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and empathy in a clinical setting.

Work Environment:

  • Work is typically performed in a medical office or clinic.
  • May involve exposure to patients with various levels of pain, discomfort, and health conditions.
  • The role may require some physical activity, such as lifting medical equipment or assisting patients.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $21.00 - $24.41 per hour
