What are the responsibilities and job description for the Designer II position at Felling Trailers?
The Designer II is responsible for using their knowledge of design and Fellings capabilities in creating novel solutions for Fellings customers on time and in budget. This is accomplished through the creation of models and drawings of weldments, assemblies and parts used throughout Felling using Computer Aided Design. Designer II is also responsible for BOM creation with the aid of ERP software. The Designer II will use their experience to bring ideas to Engineering Management and to mentor coworkers and subordinates.
Essential Specific Job Knowledge:
Technical:
Strong mechanical aptitude.
Has working knowledge of DOT standards that impact the design of Felling products.
Understanding of basic material properties such as modulus of elasticity, yield and ultimate tensile strength, principal stress, von Mises stress, etc.
Awareness of AWS welding standards
Awareness of statics including summation of forces and summation of moments.
Basic knowledge of hydraulic systems.
Basic knowledge of pneumatic systems.
CAD/CAE:
High level of experience with Solidworks and Inventor CAD systems.
Working knowledge of Auto CAD.
Awareness of ANSYS simulations.
Product:
Working knowledge of a large cross section of Felling’s products that vary in complexity from simple to complex.
Felling Process:
Working knowledge of Syspro WIP Query, Inventory Query and Change Orders.
Working knowledge of sales order process and new product development process.
Working knowledge of Felling’s production capabilities.
Working knowledge of Felling’s supply chain capabilities.
Essential Specific Job Duties:
Work independently or as part of a team as needed.
Mentor less experienced engineering team members.
Keeps abreast of changes, developments and new products in his/her area of responsibility and advises management of potential applicability.
Uses knowledge of DOT standards to ensure Felling’s products comply with applicable standards.
Uses knowledge of statics to calculate forces in simple structures and machines.
Can read and interpret simple hydraulic and pneumatic schematics.
Designs simple hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
Stays up to date on Solidworks, Inventor and Auto CAD best practices for modeling and drawing.
Contributes to the development and implementation of CAD best practices.
Contributes to the development and implementation of top down design using tools such as skeletal modeling, design tables, I-Logic, etc.
Use CAD to create routed systems models and drawings.
Contributes to improvements of Product Data management system strategies.
Occasionally sets up and run simple ANSYS simulations.
Uses knowledge to lay out and design product of moderate complexity.
Uses Syspro to generate BOM’s, cost reports, where used reports and to find statuses of items in production.
Assists in the development of new product documentation such as PSR’s, DVATS, product configurators, etc.
Uses knowledge to creatively develop designs for Felling products and solutions to internal and external customers.
Occasionally communicates with customers to ensure design meets customers’ expectations.
Creates models and drawings of weldments, assemblies and parts for sales orders, initial concepts and any other task assigned by Engineering Management.
Verifies accuracy and completeness of their work as well as checks the quality of others.
Makes revisions to existing models and drawings as directed.
Assists with the design, analysis, modeling and drawing of existing and new product.
Receives sales orders and reviews vault to determine if the model or component or something similar has been done before.
Frequently assist sales representatives with any question or issues they may have.
Converts prototypes to production ready models and documentation.
Frequently works with shop personnel to troubleshoot and solve production and design issues.
Frequently works with purchasing to spec out vendor components.
Frequently works with vendors to spec appropriate items for use at Felling.
Frequently works with Quality Control to assure parts meet specifications.
Ensures all tasks in their area of responsibility are completed on time.
Produces consistent error-free, high quality work
Has awareness of basic project management.
Manages milestones assigned to them from Engineering Management.
