Position Overview:
The Customs Broker Entry Clerk is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of international shipments by verifying, entering, and submitting import/export documentation. This role plays a critical part in compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations, proper classification of goods, and successful clearance of shipments. The ideal candidate will demonstrate precision, attention to detail, and a foundational knowledge of customs processes.
Key Responsibilities
Documentation & Data Entry:
- Accurately input shipping data into the customs brokerage system, including details from commercial invoices, bills of lading, and packing lists.
- Verify and validate product classifications, Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes, country of origin, and declared values.
Customs Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all import/export laws and CBP regulations.
- Monitor and resolve discrepancies or compliance issues promptly.
- Accurately calculate duties, taxes, and other fees based on shipment classification.
Entry Processing and Submission:
- Prepare, review, and submit customs entries electronically via Automated Broker Interface (ABI).
- Facilitate timely communication with CBP and Partner Government Agencies (PGA) to address shipment status or entry delays
Client Communication:
- Serve as a liaison between clients, carriers, freight forwarders, and government officials to gather required documentation.
- Provide entry status updates and respond to client inquiries in a professional manner.
Issue Resolution and Recordkeeping:
- Identify and resolve errors or omissions related to shipment documentation or customs filings.
- Maintain organized and compliant records of all entries, audits, and communications.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent; additional coursework in logistics, international trade, or customs regulations is a plus.
- 1-2 years of experience in a customs brokerage, freight forwarding, or data entry role preferred.
- Basic knowledge of U.S. customs procedures, HTS classification, and trade compliance.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and experience with brokerage software systems (e.g., CargoWise, Descartes) preferred.
- Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for client and agency interactions.
Skills & Competencies:
- Ability to multitask and manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Problem-solving mindset with a proactive approach to identifying compliance issues.
- Experience with international trade documentation (e.g., ISF filings and customs bonds) is a plus.
