We are a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to supporting youth in need. We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Accountant to oversee our financial operations. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with nonprofit regulations, and effective grant and donor fund management. The ideal candidate will have experience in nonprofit accounting, grant management, and financial reporting for stakeholders, including donors and board members.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Internal Controls
- Manage day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and the general ledger.
- Maintain and improve internal financial controls to ensure accuracy, prevent fraud, and safeguard organizational assets.
- Ensure compliance with all nonprofit accounting regulations and audit requirements.
- Work with leadership to develop financial policies and procedures aligned with best practices.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare and analyze financial statements, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Oversee and manage the preparation and timely filing of IRS Form 990 and other required nonprofit regulatory reports.
- Develop and present financial reports to the board, donors, and grant agencies, ensuring transparency and accountability.
- Monitor and ensure adherence to grant agreements, donor restrictions, and compliance requirements.
Grants & Donor Financial Management
- Track and manage restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring proper allocation and compliance.
- Provide financial oversight of grant-funded programs, monitoring budgets and ensuring expenditures align with funding guidelines.
- Prepare detailed financial reports for donors, foundations, and grantors, maintaining transparency in fund usage.
- Assist with grant proposals by developing financial projections and reporting structures.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
- Assist in the development and management the organization’s annual budget, collaborating with department heads to align financial planning with programmatic goals.
- Conduct financial forecasting, variance analysis, and cash flow monitoring to ensure financial sustainability.
- Identify potential financial risks and recommend strategies to mitigate them.
Audit & Compliance Management
- Coordinate annual audits and act as the primary contact for external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and grantor financial requirements.
- Stay informed of changes in nonprofit financial regulations, updating policies and procedures accordingly.
QualificationsEducation & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- At least 2 years of experience in nonprofit accounting or finance
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, GAAP, and fund accounting.
- Experience with grant management, donor financial reporting, and restricted/unrestricted fund tracking.
- Proficiency in nonprofit accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Nonprofit, Blackbaud, Sage Intacct).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple funding sources and meet diverse financial reporting requirements.
- Strong leadership and team-building abilities, with experience mentoring and developing staff.
