Job Overview:
The Controls Engineer will work on sustaining and enhancing the manufacturing lines with expertise in PLC programming, troubleshooting, and industrial data analytics. Specifically, this position will use Siemens PLCs and SQL databases to optimize and automate industrial processes. This position will focus on system integration, real-time data collection, and analytics-driven process improvements in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
We expect every engineer to use their talents and expertise to drive our production facilities to a world-class operation across all metrics through daily continuous improvement and large scale project design and execution. With the facility's production capacity and product range continuously expanding, there will be a constant stream of new and exciting projects to lead.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop, program, and troubleshoot industrial automation systems using Siemens PLCs (S7-1200, S7-1500, TIA Portal, Step 7, WinCC, etc.).
- Optimize existing PLC and HMI/SCADA systems for improved efficiency and reliability.
- Design and implement SQL databases to collect, store, and analyze process data.
- Utilize data analytics to identify performance trends, troubleshoot issues, and improve system operations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate PLC-controlled systems with enterprise-level databases and MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems).
- Work with networking and communication protocols (e.g., OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus, Profinet) for seamless data exchange.
- Conduct system diagnostics and root cause analysis to resolve automation and process control issues.
- Maintain and update technical documentation, ladder logic diagrams, and system schematics.
- Assist with industrial IoT (IIoT) implementations for smarter manufacturing solutions.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, industry regulations, and cybersecurity best practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field.
- 2 years of experience in industrial automation, PLC programming, and troubleshooting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficiency in Siemens PLC programming (TIA Portal, Step 7, WinCC, HMI development).
- Experience working with SQL databases for data collection, storage, and analysis.
- Strong understanding of industrial networks, communication protocols, and automation standards.
- Experience with SCADA and HMI development for process visualization and control.
- Ability to analyze industrial data and apply insights for process optimization.
- Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
- Knowledge of Python, SQL scripting, or other programming languages for advanced analytics.
- Knowledge of Plex or other MES Systems.
- Experience with cloud-based data storage and IIoT technologies.
- Certification in Siemens PLC programming or industrial automation.
- All other knowledge, skills, and abilities that are reasonably aligned with this role, such as strong project management and organizational skills, time management skills, problem solving skills, ability to use necessary computer software, etc.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Periods of working on feet and using tools while evaluating manufacturing equipment.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
- Visual acuity to read instructions, operate machines, and inspect parts produced.
Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment as required for safety.
