Overview
The Perfusionist plays a critical role in the healthcare team, responsible for operating the heart-lung machine and managing the patient's physiological status during cardiac surgery and other medical procedures. This position requires a high level of expertise in both technical skills and patient care, ensuring optimal outcomes for patients undergoing complex surgical interventions.
Duties
- Operate and maintain extracorporeal circulation equipment during surgical procedures.
- Monitor vital signs and physiological parameters throughout the procedure to ensure patient safety.
- Administer medications as prescribed, ensuring proper dosages and timing.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff to develop and implement perfusion strategies tailored to individual patient needs.
- Maintain accurate records of perfusion data, including medication administration and equipment settings.
- Manage inventory of perfusion supplies and equipment, ensuring availability for surgical procedures.
- Implement aseptic techniques to prevent infection during procedures.
- Conduct routine checks on equipment to ensure proper functioning before, during, and after surgeries.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of anatomy to understand the physiological implications of perfusion management.
- Proficient in medication administration with an understanding of pharmacology related to cardiac surgery.
- Experience in inventory management to ensure all necessary supplies are readily available.
- Familiarity with Durable Medical Equipment (DME) used in perfusion practices.
- Knowledge of cardiac catheterization techniques as they relate to perfusion services.
- Expertise in aseptic technique to maintain sterile conditions during procedures.
- Ability to monitor vital signs effectively and respond promptly to changes in patient status.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.
- Proficiency in IV insertion techniques for medication delivery when necessary.
- Strong organizational skills for effective inventory control within the perfusion department.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Graduate of an accredited school of perfusion technology;
2. Currently licensed as a Perfusionist in the state of Georgia.
3. Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP).
4. BCLS required
5. Knowledge of all phases of perfusion services. Must demonstrate clinical competency in the practice of perfusion, as well as qualities of leadership and sound judgment.
6. Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades.
PREFERRED:
1. Bachelor's degree of Science preferred
2. Three (3) years of recent clinical perfusion experience preferred.
