What are the responsibilities and job description for the 3.6 Spatial AI Data Engineer: Pointclouds & LiDAR position at Field AI?
Field AI is transforming how robots interact with the real world. We are building risk-aware, reliable, and field-ready AI systems that address the most complex challenges in robotics, unlocking the full potential of embodied intelligence. We go beyond typical data-driven approaches or pure transformer-based architectures, and are charting a new course, with already-globally-deployed solutions delivering real-world results and rapidly improving models through real-field applications.
We’re looking for an applied engineer who is passionate about developing advanced robot 3D mapping algorithms. In this role, you will work with a variety of laser scanners used for point cloud documentation in complex environments, focusing on designing and optimizing workflows for processing, managing, and documenting 3D point cloud datasets.
- Implement and optimize algorithms in C and Python, maintaining a clean and organized code base
- Develop and refine point cloud processing pipelines, including noise reduction, segmentation, and object detection
- Design and implement scalable systems to store and manage large 3D datasets with high reliability and performance
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project-specific documentation requirements and deliverables
- Ensure compliance with industry standards for 3D documentation and data quality
- Explore and integrate emerging technologies and tools to enhance point cloud workflows
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- Proficiency in C and Python, with a proven ability to write maintainable and efficient code
- Familiarity with Robot Operating System (ROS) and software development practices in Ubuntu
- Current hands-on experience with tools and libraries such as PCL, Open3D, and CloudCompare
- Familiarity with LiDAR systems and 3D data formats (e.g., PCD, PLY, E57, LAS)
- In-depth knowledge of 3D geometry, computer vision, and robot kinematics (e.g., transformation matrices)
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and able to work independently while managing multiple priorities
- Strong work ethic, highly self-motivated, and excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with geographical information data and georeferencing algorithms
- Knowledge of survey control and on-site calibration tools such as total stations
Compensation and Benefits
Our salary range is generous ($70,000 - $300,000 annual), but we take into consideration an individual's background and experience in determining final salary; base pay offered may vary considerably depending on geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Also, while we enjoy being together on-site, we are open to exploring a hybrid or remote option.
