The Repatriation Assistant III works under the Center for Repatriation, Tribal Relations, and Provenance Research to maintain compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the Field Museum's Repatriation Policy. This three-year term position reports to the NAGPRA Director and also works closely with staff in the Gantz Family Collections Center. The Repatriation Assistant is responsible for maintaining and updating the repatriation database, website, and associated statistics; coordinating visits related to repatriation; developing standard operating procedures; and facilitating information and repatriation requests.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Modifies and maintains the Museums repatriation database (EMu), files, and website
- Compiles and updates statistics and helps track the status of projects and activities related to the Museums repatriation efforts
- Assists Repatriation and Collections staff with repatriation-related inventories and data entry
- Assists with collections-based research, including examination of archives, and investigation into provenience and provenance
- Assists with consultations with Native American Tribes and other cultural groups regarding information and repatriation requests
- Coordinates in-person visits related to repatriation
- Coordinates packing and shipping for repatriation
- Contributes to the development of repatriation procedures and priorities
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree or equivalent in Anthropology or a related field; one to two years of museum experience
- Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities, tasks, and deadlines
- Excellent spoken and written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain respectful working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives
- Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous cultural concerns and the ability to work in collaboration with Indigenous peoples successfully on issues related to repatriation
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information
- Knowledge of collections management software, particularly EMu, is highly desirable
- Object-handling skills preferred
Pay: $24.73
