Church Organist

Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist in Washington, DC, seeks an experienced church organist to play at weekly Sunday morning services.

Duties:

Playing at each Sunday morning service, which runs from 10:30 to 11:30. This includes selecting and playing a prelude of about 8-9 minutes that begins before 10:30, offertory music of 2-3 minutes, and a postlude of about 6-7 minutes that begins at 11:30. It also includes accompanying a vocal soloist in the performance of a solo and accompanying the congregation in singing three hymns, all of which are selected by lay clergy and/or church members. Music should enhance and support the spiritual purpose of the service, be of an appropriate religious character, and maintain a high standard of musical excellence. The organist is expected to prepare adequately for each service and can use the church organ, a Schantz pipe organ, to practice at the organist's convenience.

Requirements:

High level of professional competency in organ playing and in traditional organ repertoire that inspires congregational worship. Professional music training or equivalent experience. Demonstrated ability to accompany a congregation in hymn singing. Demonstrated ability to accompany a vocal soloist in performing a solo. Ability to integrate music seamlessly into worship services. Experience playing for a Christian Science church is a plus, but not required.

Compensation will be paid monthly at the rate of $240 for each performed Sunday service as well as the Thanksgiving morning service. Free parking. Opportunity for a bonus. The organist works under the supervision of the Music Committee. An audition will be required.
