Artistic Director

The Artistic Director (AD) is responsible for carrying out the mission of First Act Theatre Arts locally and to protect the First Act Theatre Arts brand, culture, quality, and overall experience of the organization. The role provides vision and passion to the local staff, teachers, artistic teams, students, and the community at large. The AD also ensures that the local vision aligns with the larger vision and mission of First Act Theatre Arts Inc.

Job Classification / Hours: Full-time, exempt

Qualifications

  • Must have a humble and teachable spirit that is concerned with sharing the love of God in word and deed to all affected by the organization.
  • Must have experience and education in working with children and adults, must demonstrate an ability and willingness to work in a creative and positive manner with both.
  • A degree in Theater Arts, Musical Theater, Music or Theatre Arts Education or some related performing arts field is preferred.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and speaking capabilities.
  • Experience as a Director of a theater arts program and a strong understanding of both the artistic side and business side of a theater organization.
  • Strong experience in at least one aspect of theater. (ie. performer, producer, director, choreographer, conductor, musical director).
  • Must understand all aspects of theater production. (Lighting, sound, scene design, costuming, script development, special effects, etc.)
  • Must demonstrate experience in education, administration, event planning, and working with committees and boards.
  • Must demonstrate experience in managing a staff.
  • Must be able to multi-task and adapt to change easily.
  • Must have some flexibility as work hours may fluctuate.

General Responsibilities

  • Develop and give vision and direction for First Act Theatre Arts programming.
  • Maintain artistic quality of all productions including overseeing the production staff in mounting First Act Theatre Arts shows and other production related avenues.
  • Give leadership guidance and direction to production staff through regular communication, regular staff meetings, and performance reviews alongside the Executive Director.
  • Oversee the hiring, training, and review process for all teachers, counselors and artistic teams for camps, and shows along with the Executive Director.
  • Maintain positive rapport with staff, teachers, directors, technical crew, parents, students, volunteers, and community at large.
  • Conceptualize, plan, and develop long term goals and initiatives in conjunction with the Executive Director.
  • Direct one regular season show and direct high school camp show.
  • Oversee and guide the selection of shows.
  • Help create financial goals for shows and classes and a plan to accomplish the goals alongside with ED through a board approved annual budget.
  • See all produced shows and experience camps first-hand to observe quality and the administration of the program.
  • Oversee the process, experience and productions of camps, shows, and other programs as assigned.
  • Must have an active and intentional focus on relationship building at all levels of the organization.
  • Coordinate annual staff training for programming staff.
  • Pitch in and take on artistic roles when budget or emergency necessitates.
  • Manage logistical needs of programming including but not limited to facility leasing, contract management, document management, website construction, and other administrative tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

First Act Theatre Arts is a Kansas City-area nonprofit organization that encourages excellence in the theatrical arts, fostering character and community building through training, performance, and fellowship in a faith-based environment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $38,000.00 per year

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekend availability

COVID-19 considerations:
We monitor community outbreaks and standards and adjust our policies accordingly.
