The First Databank (FDB) is currently seeking a Principal Software Engineer, Next-Gen Solutions in the Technology department. The Principal Software Engineer works as part of a team responsible for participating in the design, development, and testing of healthcare / business related applications and products; however, they also lead, participate in and contribute to larger company wide development initiatives. With a focus on new product design, this position requires deep technical expertise, knowledge of the latest technology advancements, and the ability to apply and balance that knowledge with business objectives and constrains. It requires effective communication and collaboration cross functionally, and the ability to drive both clarity and outcomes in evolving circumstances.
Position will be based out of the Indianapolis, IN or Raleigh, NC office.
Responsibilities :
Understand business processes and how to optimize them
Ability to align IT strategies with business objectives
Ability to quickly learn and effectively apply emerging technologies and trends
Engage with stakeholders to understand their needs
Identify and mitigate risks
Lead the organization through IT changes and transformations
Provide technical direction for the IT team
Communicate complex technical ideas in a clear manner
Commit to ongoing professional development and learning
Learn the codebase, tools, and processes
Tier II support
Works with SMEs and teams to clarify features and specifications, architecture design, implementation, and other software development responsibilities
Responsible for the development, maintenance, and integration of complex software components.
Participate in all phases of the software development life cycles and activities that occur within lifecycles
Knowledge of strong coding practices
Creates, uses, and promotes the use of development frameworks, tools, methodologies, and procedures to reduce future coding efforts and increase functional consistency
Diagnoses and isolates software problems; formulates and implements effective solutions considering system capacity, limitations, time requirements, and desired results to resolve system problems and prevent reoccurrence
Estimates the amount of work effort required to complete tasks
Develop and maintain technical documentation
Conduct code and design reviews
Mentor software engineers
Understand DevOps Practices and tools
Help establish and enforce IT policies and procedures
Understand, adhere to, and reinforce secure development processes and procedures
Required Skills :

Very strong Interpersonal and Communication Skills with all levels of the organization

Required Experience :
Bachelor’s degree, Computer Science or Engineering highly preferred
Ten years Software Development experience with solid knowledge of Software Development Methodologies and processes
Highly competent in several of the following areas : .NET Framework, C#, Java, ASP.NET, .NET Core, Microsoft WebAPI, Python, XML, JSON, gRPC, REST Web Services, Windows, Linux
Advanced understanding of modern cloud architectures (AWS / Azure)
Experience with Generative AI including tooling and frameworks, AI agents, and prompt engineering
Understanding of modern data storage options, data analysis techniques, and strong experience in Relational Databases - (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL)
Advanced experience with DevOps concepts including Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment, and release automation
Advanced analytical, programming, and communication skills
Highly proficient in developing and reviewing code using multiple platforms and programming languages
Experience in mentoring / coaching required
Strong leadership, mentoring, and negotiation skills
Knowledge of Software Development Methodologies and processes
Advanced experience with source control using GIT

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in Indianapolis, IN. The reasonable estimate, if hired in Indianapolis, is $122,000.00 – $155,000.00. Please note this information is specific to those hired in location. If this role is open to candidates outside of location, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
