Bookkeeper Job Description
Job Title: Bookkeeper
Reports To: Pastor and/orChurch Council President
Position Status: Part-Time (averaging 10 hours a week, with an opportunity to do some remote)
Compensation: $18-20 per hour starting based on experience.
Purpose: The Church bookkeeper is responsible for the financial ministry of the church. Works closely with the Finance Ministry, Administrator, and Pastor.
Job Responsibilities and Duties:
- Process the receipt, deposit, and disbursement of all church funds following the ELCA Financial Best Practices for Congregations.
- Record and reconcile all financial offerings received in the financial software
- Maintain and reconcile confidentially all financial information pertaining to receiving, recording, and depositing of funds
- Produce individual charitable giving summaries semi-annually.
- Assure timely payment of invoices
- Manage financial records in the fund accounting software.
- Reconcile all accounts monthly
- Analyze and prepare monthly financial reports for the Finance Ministry for presentation to the Church Council.
- Work with the Finance Ministry and Administrator to prepare an annual budget for approval by the congregation and implement it upon approval.
- Process payroll semi-monthly.
- Ensure state and federal withholdings are promptly paid and timely filed
- File and pay any necessary tax reports.
- Provide the Finance Ministry agenda for discussion and implementation.
- Attend monthly Finance Ministry meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Pastor or church council.
Job Skills and Requirements:
- Good organizational and planning skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient with GAAP ( Generally Accepted Accounting Principals)
- Familiar with Church Fund Accounting software or willing to learn.
- Proficiency in the use of Standard Office Tools (Computer, Telephone, Copy Machine, etc.)
- Self-starter, good at multitasking and prioritizing projects to complete responsibilities in a timely manner
- Should possess strong administrative skills and the ability to work independently without supervision.
- Timely and consistent attendance, including availability for Finance Ministry meetings and Church Council meetings as needed.
- Protect the reputation and integrity of others through strict confidentiality
- Cooperation in scheduling and planning to see that the goals and objectives of the church are being realized
Evaluation and Compensation: Following a 90 day probation period, a review will be completed. An annual review will be done thereafter by the Church Council President and the Pastor. Compensation is reviewed annually.

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
